A former University of Oklahoma football player has disclosed in sworn testimony that he used and sold cocaine while playing for the Sooners under former coach Barry Switzer. In a deposition, taken as part of a reporter's libel suit over Switzer's best-selling autobiography, "Bootlegger's Boy," former Oklahoma linebacker Brad McBride said he had used cocaine and had sold the drug while playing for the Sooners between 1984 and 1987.

When Barry Switzer resigned as football coach at the University of Oklahoma in 1989, book publishers saw his story as the stuff of which best-selling autobiographies are made. As the Sooners' coach for 16 seasons, Switzer had felt the highs of three national championships and 12 Big Eight titles. He had also experienced, in late 1988 and early '89, the lows of NCAA probation and a variety of criminal charges involving his players.

Jury selection began in Austin, Tex., in the $30 million lawsuit by a newspaper reporter who accuses former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer of libel, slander and invasion of privacy over allegations made in Switzer's autobiography "Bootlegger's Boy." Jack Taylor Jr., a reporter with the Los Angeles Daily News, and his wife Myrna Lee, are seeking $5 million in damages and a $25 million punitive award.

Patrick Collins ran for two touchdowns and six other Sooners scored rushing touchdowns in a 565-yard ground assault Saturday, powering top-ranked Oklahoma to a 71-10 thrashing of Kansas. "There was no intensity level at all out there today," Oklahoma Coach Barry Switzer said. "We had them ready to play mentally and physically, but there was no emotional involvement in the ballgame.
