Brad Rothermel, former UNLV athletic director, says university President Robert Maxson asked him in the fall of 1984 if there was any evidence that could lead to the dismissal of then-basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian. Rothermel, testifying before a legislative committee investigating Tarkanian's resignation last year, said Maxson called him to his office shortly after taking over the presidency of the Las Vegas school in 1984.

UC Irvine is stepping up negotiations with Brad Rothermel, the former Nevada Las Vegas athletic director, as it seeks to meet its goal of naming an athletic director by Nov. 1. Though Rothermel has not been offered the job, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Horace Mitchell had a 30-minute telephone conversation with him Thursday night, trying to find middle ground regarding Rothermel's insistence on dramatically increased funding for the athletic department, Rothermel said.

UC Irvine has begun interviewing candidates for athletic director, meeting Monday with outgoing New Mexico Athletic Director Gary Ness and scheduling an interview Friday with Brad Rothermel, the former athletic director at Nevada Las Vegas. Rothermel headed UNLV's athletic department for 10 years before resigning in June, 1990, saying he was tired of the strain of the job.

Brad Rothermel, one of two finalists for the job of athletic director at UC Irvine, has withdrawn from consideration because his demands for dramatically increased athletic funding will not be met, Rothermel said Monday night. The remaining finalist is Vic Cegles, an assistant athletic director at Arizona State.

Brad Rothermel, former Nevada Las Vegas athletic director, is one of three finalists for the UC Irvine athletic director job. The others are Vic Cegles, an assistant athletic director for development at Arizona State, and Fairleigh Dickinson Athletic Director Roy Danforth. The three were among five candidates interviewed on campus last week, and they will return for second interviews beginning Monday, a university spokesman announced.

The NCAA has completed its preliminary inquiry of the Nevada Las Vegas basketball program and is expected to lodge charges of major rules violations against the national champion Rebels, according to a source familiar with the inquiry. NCAA enforcement officials have prepared a list of charges and could send it to the university in a matter of weeks, according to the source, who asked not to be identified.
