Cal State Northridge basketball Coach Bobby Braswell and Athletic Director Paul Bubb have agreed on the major points of a renegotiated contract, although Braswell remains a candidate for the vacant job at Oregon. Braswell has a clause in the three-year contract he signed last May that calls for renegotiation after the first season, Bubb said. "I like the idea of doing a multi-year contract," Bubb said. "I also like the ability to renegotiate contracts if someone is doing well."

Carloes Harper, a freshman guard on the Cal State Northridge basketball team, has obtained a release from Coach Bobby Braswell and is taking visits to Division II and NAIA schools. Harper visited Cal State San Bernardino last weekend, will visit UC Riverside this weekend and The Master's College next weekend. Transferring to another Division I school would require Harper to sit out one season. Division II and NAIA have no such restriction.

Andre Larry banked in a jump shot over three defenders with 10 seconds remaining as Cal State Northridge stunned Oregon, 79-77, Saturday at Eugene, Ore. Larry had 23 points and eight rebounds, while Markus Carr had 13 points--including a free throw with three seconds left-- for Northridge (4-2). Alex Scales led Oregon (3-2) with 23 points. After Oregon's Darius Wright missed a layup with five seconds to go, Carr was fouled by Scales. He missed his first attempt but swished the second.

Coach Bobby Braswell of Cal State Northridge met Thursday with Mitch Barnhart, athletic director at Oregon State, to discuss the possibility of becoming the Beavers' next men's basketball coach. Braswell was not offered a position but said it was "a good meeting." He declined further comment. Barnhart, who Sunday fired Eddie Payne after five losing seasons, traveled Thursday to Northridge to meet with Braswell. Cal State Fullerton also has contacted Northridge about interviewing Braswell.

It looks familiar to Cal State Northridge men's basketball Coach Bobby Braswell. During Braswell's first season as an assistant at Oregon, the Ducks found a way to lose most of their close games during a 10-20 season. Now that Braswell is coach at Northridge, he has watched the Matadors (1-5) lose all four of their games decided in the final 15 seconds. "It's like Oregon all over again," Braswell said after Thursday's loss to Ohio. Braswell can only hope it turns around as quickly.

While Pepperdine narrows its search for a basketball coach, Bobby Braswell of Cal State Northridge said Friday he is not among the candidates. "I'm not interested in the Pepperdine job," said Braswell, reportedly a candidate to succeed Jan van Breda Kolff, who resigned last week to become coach of St. Bonaventure. The school reportedly is considering Tom Asbury, former Kansas State coach, and Paul Westphal, former coach of the Seattle SuperSonics.

Cleveland High Coach Bob Braswell has enlisted the help of Byron Scott of the Los Angeles Lakers and Earl Cureton of the Clippers and representatives of various professional organizations to run a summer camp in which basketball will receive second billing. The camp will include basketball instruction and afternoon tournaments, but of more importance, Braswell says, are daily seminars covering such topics as drug and alcohol education, gang activity, and health and nutrition.

Like many basketball coaches, Bobby Braswell is full of it. Optimism, that is. Sit down and talk Cal State Northridge basketball with the new coach and you'll hear a lot about class, pride, attitude and so on. He'll tell you about how the players are going to graduate, how they will be role models in the community and how he'd like to pack Matador Gym to the rafters, turning it into a pit for opponents. But can he convince any recruits?

Eddie Hill, who played basketball for Bobby Braswell at Cleveland High, was hired Friday as an assistant coach under Braswell at Cal State Northridge. Hill, 23, spent the past season as a restricted-earnings assistant at University of Portland, helping the Pilots to a West Coast Conference tournament title and their first NCAA tournament berth since 1959. Hill's hiring had been rumored since Braswell took over the Northridge program in May.
