Supt. Tim Harvey, who has led the Brea Olinda Unified School District for six years, announced Tuesday that he would retire in December. "The District is in a good place right now and the time is right for me to move to a new phase of my professional and personal life," Harvey stated in a news release. Harvey, who has worked in the district for 20 years, was previously a teacher and administrator in Orange and La Habra.

Hoping to boost enrollment in two of the district's smallest schools, the Brea-Olinda Unified School District has adopted a new policy that will make it more difficult for students to transfer to other schools. By unanimous vote, the Board of Education Monday banned student transfers from Laurel Elementary School and Olinda Elementary School, starting in school year 1993-94.

Peggy Lynch, superintendent of the Brea Olinda Unified School District, is taking a job in San Diego County, school officials said. Lynch, who has presided over the 6,000-student school system for seven years, will become superintendent of the San Dieguito Union High School District. On Monday, the Brea Olinda school board will discuss the process for finding a new superintendent, said board President James Reed. "We're going to miss her a lot.

The Brea Olinda Unified School District will learn Tuesday if voters think they deserve $27 million. The money would come from Bond Measure K, and would help with repairs and improvements to city schools. Local bond measures require approval by two-thirds of voters.

The city's school board has appointed Pat Ahern, principal of Country Hills Elementary School, to the position of curriculum coordinator. She succeeds Linda MacDonnell, who left to accept a position in the County Department of Education. Ahern joined the Brea Olinda Unified School District in 1970 as a high school English teacher. She has been principal at Country Hills since 1993.

The Board of Education on Monday approved a 1999-2000 final budget for the Brea Olinda Unified School District that will give a financial boost to campus safety, teacher development, and employees. Responding to the April shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., where two students shot and killed 12 classmates and a teacher before taking their own lives, the district received a $125,540 increase that will be spent on staff and equipment to reduce school violence.

The Brea Olinda Unified School District reached a settlement with Brea-Olinda Ventures and Texaco, developers of the Olinda Ranch project, by accepting a contingent land payment offer in lieu of building an elementary school on the Olinda Ranch development site. An original agreement between the two parties called for an elementary school to be built as part of the project. More than $5.6 million was designated to cover half of the school construction costs.
