Leave it to a loved one to make ambition seem a quixotic vagary. "Stop pretendin',/You're not John Lennon," Brendan Benson's girlfriend tells him in the opening chorus on this two-disc album. Probably not. But like a lot of contributors to IPO festival promoter David Bash's 43-song collection (available in Augustat http://www.notlame.com), Benson is finding his voice.

The Raconteurs Rockers Anyone wondering what Jack White, above left, would sound like outside the basic guitar-drums-piano foundation of the White Stripes will get a chance early next year as the rock auteur takes a break from the Stripes to release an album and tour with the Raconteurs, a band he has formed with Detroit singer-songwriter Brendan Benson, above right. "It's a totally new band that sounds nothing like the White Stripes," White said of the venture.

Riding back to the Danger zone Six years ago, Harvey Danger was playing the KROQ Weenie Roast, with the Seattle foursome's bouncy "Flagpole Sitta" reaching No. 1 that summer on the modern rock giant. This week, frontman Sean Nelson is fretting that nobody will show up Saturday night when the group plays the Troubadour. "The moment we were newsworthy seems like a long time ago," he concedes.
