No. 1 draft choice Todd Lyght, who suffered a sprained right ankle in practice Thursday, will sit out Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers at Anaheim Stadium, Coach John Robinson said Friday. It is doubtful Lyght will return against the Raiders at the Coliseum Oct. 20, Robinson said. The injury came when Lyght was pressing starting cornerbacks Jerry Gray and Darryl Henley for more playing time.

For the first time since Marcus Dupree's toe injury in the middle of training camp, Coach John Robinson seriously raised the possibility of activating the tailback from the injured-reserve list. "He is a prospect. . . . I don't know if he's suddenly going to be doing a lot of playing," Robinson said. "He's a good young player that I've got to try to get playing if I can."

Coach John Robinson said Thursday that Gaston Green and Cleveland Gary will split time at tailback Sunday at Atlanta, with Green getting the starting nod. "It's just going to be an even thing," Robinson said, emphasizing that neither Green nor Gary is ahead of the other in his mind. Injury report: Recently signed Bruce Klostermann will replace injured Frank Stams at one inside linebacker spot, Robinson said, with veteran Brett Faryniarz going in on passing downs.

The Rams activated special teams star Tim Tyrrell Friday and placed rookie tailback Keith Jones on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Tyrrell had been on injured reserve since Aug. 30 with a hamstring pull. Jones had been on the team's two-man inactive list on game days. To make room for Tyrrell on the 45-man roster, rookie linebacker Brett Faryniarz was moved to Jones' spot on the inactive list for this week.

The Rams announced the signing of veteran offensive lineman Duval Love on Monday, narrowing their list of unsigned veterans to 10, not including defensive lineman Doug Reed, who does not figure in the team's plans. Terms and length of the deal were not disclosed. Love, 28, will be in a battle to hold onto his starting spot at right guard with either newly acquired Gerald Perry or Joe Millinchik. If there's a bigger shake-up, long-time starting left tackle Irv Pankey might also be in the fray.

You have your dry heat, your humid heat, your Miami Heat, and, Sunday at Anaheim Stadium, vacuum-packed heat. Yes, all the degrees with half the oxygen. Hard to breathe? The Rams and San Francisco 49ers ran sprint after sprint on grass turned cooking surface, trying to get their breath in a stadium with all air flow of a sealed tennis-ball can.

At least one Ram defensive player says it will be a little strange at Anaheim Stadium Sunday when the Rams are playing the Phoenix Cardinals, the team that now employs their former defensive coordinator, Fritz Shurmur. Shurmur was fired in January after nine seasons--eight as coordinator--with the Rams, and his 3-4 defense was junked in favor of Jeff Fisher's 4-3 attack scheme. "I think it's going to be kind of funny," cornerback Jerry Gray said. "I guess it's kind of like a sentimental thing.
