After more than a year of accusations of mismanagement and negligence and reports of stolen or missing animals, the director of the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control has been removed from his job. The Board of Supervisors, in a closed-door meeting Tuesday, voted to remove department head Brian Berger and his top deputy, George Baca. Dawson Oppenheimer, an aide to Supervisor Mike Antonovich, confirmed that the board voted 3 to 2 to oust the two officials.

Chapman College women's basketball Coach Brian Berger received a public reprimand Monday from the NCAA Division 2 Women's Basketball committee, for his actions before and after the Panthers' 63-54 loss to Cal Poly Pomona in the Division 2 Western Region final. The committee's reprimand specifically mentioned comments Berger had made in the press interview area after that game. Berger could not be reached for comment.

Brian Berger, who led the Chapman College women's basketball team to three NCAA Division II Western Regional finals in five seasons, has resigned, Chapman officials announced Monday. Berger cited personal considerations for his resignation, but refused to outline his reasons. Berger said he decided to leave Thursday--after thinking about it for two weeks--and informed Chapman administrators Friday. "I was very surprised to find out he was leaving," Walt Bowman, Chapman athletic director said.

Chapman College women's basketball Coach Brian Berger, who had plenty to say after last month's loss to Cal Poly Pomona in the Division II Western Regional championship game, was a little on the quiet side Tuesday. "I've got to be real careful what I say," said Berger, who received a public reprimand Monday from the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball committee for his actions before and after the Panthers' 63-54 loss to the Broncos on March 12.

They reshuffled the deck Friday in the athletic department at Chapman College and when they were done, the Panthers had three new coaches and a new sports information director. Dr. Walt Bowman, Chapman's athletic director, introduced his four new appointments at a press conference on campus. The new appointments are: --Paul Kahn, head coach of the women's basketball team. Kahn comes from Costa Mesa High School, where he had been the girls' coach for the last six years.

The security guards figured he was just another well-heeled lawyer. He wore a dark suit with suspenders, carried an attache case and towed a large leather bookcase strapped to a dolly. But when his elevator stopped on the 34th floor, Gian Luigi Ferri slung two guns over his shoulders, grabbed a satchel full of ammunition and headed straight for the conference room of the law firm of Pettit & Martin, where he shot four people he had never met, who happened to be there by a fluke.
