Shaquille O'Neal will have number 34 jersey retired on Tuesday night at Staples Center as the Lakers host the Dallas Mavericks. On Monday night, former teammate Brian Shaw said he's excited for O'Neal. "He deserves it. He's a big part of the Laker tradition," said Shaw, the associate head coach of the Indiana Pacers. "He was directly responsible for a lot of that. I couldn't be happier for him. " Although O'Neal left the Lakers somewhat contentiously in 2004 after winning three titles with the team (eventually even becoming a Boston Celtic)

Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw sat on the scorer's table after practice Wednesday inside Amway Arena, his arms crossed, his jaw tight, his demeanor serious. Shaw had watched film of the Lakers' 108-104 loss to the Orlando Magic in Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday and didn't like what he saw. The Magic made 75% of its shots at the half, 62.5% for the game, both NBA Finals records. The Lakers still have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series, but Shaw was not happy.

Brian Shaw is a highly respected assistant coach in the NBA, currently working as the associate head coach of the Indiana Pacers. Shaw has interviewed for several head-coaching positions in the past, and is one the candidates the Clippers are considering to replace Vinny Del Negro as the team's coach. Shaw, 47, has had the good fortune to have worked under and played under former Lakers Coach Phil Jackson. As a Laker, Shaw played alongside two of the best to ever play the game in Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, and he played with Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics early in his career.

Someone with a Lakers connection might get the job as Charlotte's head coach. With former Utah legend Jerry Sloan bowing out of the picture, Brian Shaw and Quin Snyder are the finalists. It would be either one's first time as an NBA head coach, and it probably wouldn't be easy. The Bobcats went 7-59 this season and set a record for lowest winning percentage (.106) in NBA history. "They are impressive candidates," Bobcats President Rod Higgins said in an interview, adding he might take at least two more weeks to reach a decision.

Coach Phil Jackson said Shaw, who worked out with the team recently while he was a free agent, was signed to see if he can help fill the void while Kobe Bryant's right hand heals.

Brian Shaw was definitely surprised the Lakers didn't hire Phil Jackson after firing Mike Brown this month. Shaw was particularly taken aback that they informed Jackson in a midnight phone call of their choice to hire Mike D'Antoni. "Under the circumstances, Phil Jackson, who's been there and done that and put a lot of money in everybody's pockets around here, the way it was done . . . it's mind-boggling," Shaw said Monday in an interview with The Times. "I was joking with him, at least you got a phone call, even though it was midnight.
