As Gilbert Robinson crawled out of his shattered windshield after his oil tanker crashed on Interstate 95 Thursday night, he wasn't thinking of how the accident might foul up traffic on the Northeast's main corridor for weeks. As his truck, filled with 12,000 gallons of heating oil, began to burn, he said, he was only thinking one thing: "Run, baby, run!"

Interstate 95 in Bridgeport is expected to be back to normal for travelers today, months after a fiery crash involving a loaded tanker truck. State officials are opening lanes in both directions on the reconstructed Howard Avenue overpass, heavily damaged in the March crash. Paul Breen of the state Department of Transportation said commuters were going to find marked improvement in the traffic flow.

A former mayor of Bridgeport was sentenced to nine years in federal prison Tuesday for collecting more than $500,000 in bribes and kickbacks. Joseph P. Ganim's corrupt actions tarnished his attempts to improve Connecticut's largest city and led to a general cynicism about politics, U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton said in sentencing him. He ordered Ganim, 43, to surrender Sept. 16. Once a rising political star, Ganim often claimed credit for bringing Bridgeport back from bankruptcy.

Miami-Dade County, Fla., and Bridgeport, Conn., on Wednesday filed damage suits against the handgun industry, joining a mounting legal campaign by the nation's big cities to hold firearms makers responsible for law enforcement and other costs of responding to gun crimes and accidental shootings. The anti-gun suits were the first since New Orleans and Chicago filed last fall. However, gun litigation is a major topic of discussion this week at a Washington meeting of the U.S.

Bridgeport Mayor Joseph P. Ganim, who drew national praise for his efforts to revive Connecticut's largest city, will be fighting for his freedom in a corruption trial starting this week. Ganim, a Democrat who had planned to run for governor, faces up to 176 years in prison if convicted of all 24 charges. He has pleaded not guilty.
