Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has heard the arguments on both sides of California's Proposition 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the smart bet seems to be that, though both restrictions on same-sex marriage are very likely to be struck down, the court is not going to make a sweeping ruling that will allow homosexuals to marry in all 50 states. That means the political fight will go on and on. Yes, the new conventional wisdom is that gay-rights advocates are certain to win the war, but, without a clear declaration from the high court that marriage equality is a constitutional right, there are many battles yet to be fought.

First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck were among a high-powered roster of public figures whose personal and financial information was posted on the Internet. The data, which include purported home addresses, Social Security numbers, phone numbers and credit reports, appeared on a website that seemed to originate in Russia. The Secret Service and the FBI said Tuesday that they were opening investigations, and President Obama confirmed the apparent breach.

Britney Spears is in a war of words with her former employers at "The X Factor. " The pop diva released a statement Friday confirming that she won't be returning as a judge for the Fox singing show. Except, according to Spears, it wasn't the producers' decision. It was all hers. "I've made the very difficult decision not to return for another season," a statement attributed to Spears said. "I had an incredible time doing the show and I love the other judges and I am so proud of my teens, but it's time for me to get back in the studio....

It's been a big day for Britney Spears. Not only did she confirm she was leaving "The X Factor" after only one season, she also announced she and Jason Trawick were breaking off their engagement after only one year. "I'll always adore him and we will remain great friends," Spears said in a statement released to People announcing the end of the engagement. Brit's rep told the mag the decision was mutual.
