Candice Wiggins added another special accomplishment to her Stanford career Thursday night: all-time leading scorer. Wiggins broke Kate Starbird's career school scoring record and finished with 18 points in 22 minutes, leading the seventh-ranked Cardinal past USC, 77-51, in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Palo Alto. Wiggins began the game needing 12 points to surpass Starbird's mark of 2,215, set from 1993 to 1997.

The need for a lift is just as great for the player, who is doing everything possible to get back on the court. A student production of South Pacific is drawing raves this week at Newbury Park High, but it's an ensemble cast a few yards away from the performing arts theater that continues to upstage everyone. The girls' basketball team continued its two-year run Friday night, routing Moorpark, 65-24, to extend its Marmonte League winning streak to 22 games. The Panthers (16-7, 8-0 in league play) have stars. They have depth. They have their second consecutive league title virtually wrapped up.

Even when UCLA had a full roster, including its best player this season, Noelle Quinn, there were victories that felt more like survival than satisfaction. Thursday's Pacific 10 Conference contest against Washington turned out that way for the Bruins. After a slow first half, both teams fought to a near standstill before UCLA pulled out an 86-81 victory before 737 at Pauley Pavilion. Nikki Blue scored 18 of her game-high 23 points in the second half for UCLA (14-7 overall, 8-4 in the Pac 10).

MEN at Long Beach State 76, UC Santa Barbara 64: Casper Ware scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half in the Big West Conference opener for both schools. Long Beach State, 6-7 overall and 1-0 in the Big West, held multiple double-digit leads in the second half, but the Gauchos cut the lead to 68-61 on a three-pointer by James Powell with 1:29 remaining. Alex Jurewitz is lending her newfound strength to the Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula girls' tennis team.
