Shopping won't be the same for Dory Levi once the Broadway department stores disappear from the Southern California retailing scene. "I'm very sad," said Levi, a 57-year-old Beverly Hills resident, as she took advantage of the latest in a seemingly endless string of sales at the three-story Broadway in Century City on Tuesday. It was a cultural institution, a luxurious dining room where one could find the real little old lady of Pasadena on any given afternoon. It was a place locked in a time warp of brass chandeliers, white table linens and good manners. A place where tea and an occasional cocktail were served while fashion models strutted on the catwalk that ran through the center of the room. It was a place, in short, where one went to be seen.

In an attempt to stem its mounting losses, R. H. Macy & Co. said Wednesday that it will close seven poorly performing Macy's department stores, most of them on the East Coast, and the Bullock's in La Habra. The closings, to be completed by Aug. 1, will result in the layoff or reassignment of 1,850 workers and change the face of some communities in which the stores are important retail assets.
