The much-anticipated deal to establish a Ford auto superstore in Burbank suffered a potentially fatal blow Thursday. City officials said the auto company has abandoned plans to build a network of such mega-dealerships in the San Fernando Valley, and the auto maker said it was never committed to such a plan to begin with. A judge ruled Wednesday that the city of Burbank lacks the power to veto the expansion of Burbank Airport, leading proponents of growth to claim victory in a long political struggle. Mayor Larry Zarian has urged both sides in the fight over a proposed new terminal at Burbank Airport to end their expensive legal battle and renew stalled negotiations. In a letter to the mayors of Burbank and Pasadena and the president of the Burbank airport authority this week, Zarian called the prolonged fight a "vicious cycle." "Each time there is a decision, the losing side vows to appeal the court ruling," he said.

After a five-month wait, federal officials announced Friday that the head of the Federal Aviation Administration will make a special trip to the San Fernando Valley on Aug. 11 in an effort to settle the long-running battle over growth at Burbank airport. The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday gave Burbank a small victory over the Burbank Airport Authority in one of the many legal battles between them over the authority's plans to build a bigger terminal.
