The vast majority of fast-food workers in the U.S. say they've been the victims of wage theft, according to a survey released Tuesday. Out of 1,088 respondents nationwide, 89% said they have been forced to do off-the-books work, been denied breaks, been refused overtime pay or been placed in similarly unsavory circumstances. The same holds for 84% of McDonald's workers, 92% of Burger King employees and 82% of Wendy's rank and file, according to the survey, which was conducted by Hart Research for the Low Pay Is Not OK campaign.

What did it mean? The half-page ad--echoing the tone of loyalty oaths that cowardly television networks made their employees sign during the "Red-scare" frenzy in the decade following World War II--appeared in several hundred newspapers Nov. 4-5. Out of the blue. No explanation. This was the title: "An Open Letter to the American People." This was the text: "Burger King wishes to go on record as supporting traditional American values on television, especially the importance of the family.

Just weeks after a plea for her birth mother to step forward blazed through media outlets across the globe, Katheryn Deprill stood just one room away from the woman who abandoned her as a newborn 27 years ago in a Burger King bathroom. As she got ready to meet with her birth mother, Deprill entered the lawyer's conference room with a lifetime of questions. Why did she leave me? What does she look like? But before the answers even started, Deprill got something else.

The King wants his crown back: Fast-food chain Burger King  is continuing its reinvention by planning to go public - again. Within the next three months, the hamburger giant said it will re-list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange. The last time Burger King traded publicly was from 2006 to 2010, when investment firm 3G Capital took it over for a whopping $3.3 billion and turned it private. In a bit of a convoluted deal, 3G said late Tuesday that it is selling a 29% stake in the Miami-based restaurant to London-based acquisition company Justice Holdings.

Bill Elwell doesn't want any more customers, but they just keep coming. "Is McDonald's closed today?" he likes to grunt to those lined up outside his tiny burger stand in an industrial pocket of the San Fernando Valley. "Why is everyone here? Go down the street!" Elwell is 87 and cranky, and folks can't seem to get enough of him. It's been 49 years since Elwell took to the grill of his 10-by-20-foot burger stand on Oxnard Street where Van Nuys meets Sherman Oaks. He once flipped a burger from grill to floor to shush a customer complaining about too much mayonnaise.

Forget the old-fashioned hamburger with a side of fries. This fall, Burger King is offering a burger with the fries built right in. On Sept. 1, the fast-food chain will introduce the French Fry Burger, a standard hamburger with four French fries inserted between the beef patty and the bun, the Associated Press reports. The French Fry Burger may not be a complicated culinary offering, but it is cheap: The burger and four fries between a bun will cost you just $1 from Sept. 1 through the end of the fall, according to the AP report.  And if the four French fries in the burger curb your craving for a side of fries, you will save on calories: The French Fry Burger has 390 calories, while a burger and a medium side of fries will run you 650 calories, according to information on the fast-food chain's website.
