Holiday boat parades are dazzling, glitzy affairs that remind me of what the Rose Parade might look like if it were held at night and took place on water. Christmas, tiki and even Elvis themes are depicted in strings of colored lights along masts and bows as boats glide along marinas and channels. Parades are free, but do require some advance planning to get a good viewing spot. Check out these upcoming light shows; click on the websites to find details and parade routes. Newport Beach: The 103rd Christmas Boat Parade is one of the oldest and longest in Southern California.

About 55,000 people are expected to attend Saturday's 26th annual Marina del Rey Christmas Boat Parade, which begins at 5:30 p.m. "Christmas Dreams" is the theme of the 2-hour parade, sponsored by the Pioneer Skippers Boat Owners Assn., a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting safe family boating. Actress Cloris Leachman is the parade grand marshal.

Two groups dedicated to cleaning up Santa Monica Bay will showcase environmentally friendly boating practices at a fair today. Sponsors Santa Monica BayKeepers and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Project hope the Clean Boating Fair will teach boaters to use environmentally safe methods while on the water, said Kris Haddad of the BayKeepers. The fair will be held from noon to 5 p.m. at Burton Chace Park. Those wishing to have their boats inspected are asked to dock at the park's guest docks.

Los Angeles County planners will host a public meeting tonight to discuss possible changes in the land-use plan that governs future development of Marina del Rey. For years, the county has wanted to encourage redevelopment of the publicly owned marina so the harbor can compete with newer developments planned for the surrounding area.
