Uniting brands that rule the slopes and dominate the waves, Burton Snowboards said Thursday that it had purchased Channel Islands Surfboards in Santa Barbara. The two companies were born of lowly circumstances -- one in a barn, the other in a garage -- but as far as some industry insiders are concerned, it's a marriage made in board-sport heaven. The deal pairs legendary surfboard shaper Al Merrick with snowboarding pioneer Jake Burton.

A professional snowboarder who just missed qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team was killed in an avalanche during a video shoot in the Sierra Nevada. Jamil Khan, 22, of Gloversville, N.Y., and three companions were making a snowboarding video near Donner Ski Ranch in Truckee, Calif., on Wednesday when he was swept away by plunging snow. Khan was standing on an overhang of ice and snow when a 20-foot section gave way, authorities said.

The gig: Co-founders and co-owners of Park LA, a wholesale showroom in downtown Los Angeles' Fashion District. Park LA, which opened in mid-2006 with only a few clients, now represents 15 brands, including Converse by John Varvatos, LaFine and Trunk Ltd. As representatives of the designers, they sell the clothing wholesale to boutiques as well as giants such as Barneys New York and Fred Segal, collecting commissions on the sales.

K2 Inc.'s plan to purchase snowboard maker Ride Inc. for $14.3 million would help solidify the Los Angeles-based company as a leading manufacturer of snowboards, expanding its market share as the sport's popularity continues to grow. The deal for Preston, Wash.-based Ride, which includes $5 million in long-term debt, follows K2's acquisition in March of Morrow Snowboards Inc. for an undisclosed amount.

Ten survivors were evacuated by air Tuesday from a remote lodge in the Canadian Rockies where they took refuge after an avalanche that killed seven back-country skiers, including a champion U.S. snowboarder and three other Americans, two from California. One of the survivors, John Seibert of Wasilla, Alaska, said the skiers were climbing a 30-degree slope Monday afternoon when he suddenly "felt the snow settle and heard a loud crack."
