Bridgestone Corp., the Japanese tire manufacturer that bought Firestone Tire & Rubber co. last yer, said it will spend $350 million to build a second plant in Tennessee to manufacturer radial tires for trucks and buses. The company plans to start building the plant later this year near Morrison, about 75 miles southeast of Nashville.

HCA Inc., the largest U.S. hospital operator, must pay $26.5 million to two former contract workers who claimed the company defamed them and harmed their attempt to start a competing business, a Tennessee jury said. Alexander Batsuk and Ryan Howard were working for outside contractors doing business with HCA's information technology and services unit when they tried to set up their own company, their attorney said.

The 14-year relationship between Adidas and Indiana basketball Coach Bob Knight was ended by the shoe manufacturer last week because he failed to wear the company's apparel as required under his contract. But Adidas said it wasn't because Knight wore the wrong shoes. Nor did it have anything to do with Knight's recent one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct when he appeared to kick his son, Patrick, during a game. So what's the rift?

Shortly before 8 p.m. Eastern time, Fiesta Bowl executive director John Junker was in the process of watching the desired matchups for his Jan. 4 bowl vaporize. Earlier in the day he was at the Orange Bowl in Miami. UCLA had a 17-point lead over Miami when Junker left to catch his plane for Atlanta. In a phone call during the flight, he found out that UCLA had lost by four. One less undefeated team on the board.

Whoever said "there is no 'I' in team" clearly didn't know Bonnie Richardson was going to come along. Richardson, a junior at Rochelle High in Texas, won the state 1A track team title last weekend -- all by herself. She was the only athlete from her school to qualify for the meet, but she won the high jump and 200 meters, placed second in the long jump and 100 meters and was third in the discus. She scored 42 team points to edge second-place Chilton, which had 36.
