With its 18 tons of sets, costumes and equipment sitting in four huge container cartons on Pier 234 at the Port of Long Beach, the management of the Byelorussian Ballet of Minsk is trying to pick up the pieces of its canceled Los Angeles and San Diego tour. Already in the red "about $911,000" in advance advertising and booking fees, according to the tour management, costs could still mount for equipment storage.

With promoters giving conflicting explanations, the touring Byelorussian Ballet of Minsk has canceled all four of its scheduled "Nutcracker" performances in San Diego. The Tuesday through Thursday performances would have been the company's U.S. debut.

Byelorussians Cancel: The Byelorussian Ballet of Minsk has canceled its entire tour, including performances that were to begin Friday at the Shrine Auditorium. A local publicist for the company said Monday that the 150-member company's exit visas from Belarus had been denied. Originally scheduled for a two-week visit to San Diego and Los Angeles, the company canceled the San Diego performances last week.

For Southern California dance, 1991 turned out to be a year of cancellations. American Ballet Theatre called off two scheduled Southland engagements. So did the Byelorussian Ballet from the new post-Soviet capital of Minsk.
