TEMPE, Ariz.  - No one in camp is comparing Kevin Jepsen to sidearm-throwing Joe Smith , but there is a noticeable difference in the delivery of the Angels reliever, who has gone from a straight over-the-top motion to a three-quarter-arm slot. "This off-season I thought, 'As a kid, you pick up a rock and throw it, you're going to throw your natural way,' and my natural way is down here," Jepsen said, mimicking his new motion. "Since I had shoulder surgery in 2004, I've been trying to find something that didn't hurt.

TEMPE, Ariz. - A brutal spring for the Angels bullpen ended on a high note Wednesday when closer Ernesto Frieri retired the side in order in the ninth inning of a 6-3 exhibition victory over the Texas Rangers in Tempe Diablo Stadium. Frieri got Yangervis Solarte to pop to third and Jeff Baker to fly to right, and he struck out Julio Borbon in the Cactus League finale, as the Angels left Arizona with a 9-18-4 record. “That's the best Ernie has looked all spring,” Manager Mike Scioscia said.

PHOENIX - Yasiel Puig is ready to play in the major leagues. That was the opinion offered Tuesday by fellow Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes, who finished second in American League rookie-of-the-year balloting last season while leading the Oakland Athletics to a division title. "To me and to anyone who's seen what he's done, he's ready," Cespedes said. Puig is batting .500 for the Dodgers in the Cactus League. The 22-year-old outfielder was four for four in the Dodgers' 7-1 victory over the A's, including a two-run home run in the first inning that cleared Cespedes' head in left field.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Angels' Howie Kendrick says he doesn't treat spring training any differently than the regular season. "I'm just trying to get ready. The only way to do that is to play like it's a regular-season game," said Kendrick, who raised his spring average to .500 with two hits Friday in an 8-5 Cactus League loss to the Seattle Mariners. "I think every guy in here does that but for me the biggest thing is just trying to play like it's a real game. That's the only way you're really going to get prepared.

TEMPE, Ariz. - If the Cactus League had a Hall of Fame, the Angels' Howie Kendrick would be inducted on the first ballot. Over the last seven springs, Kendrick is hitting .367, 75 points better than his regular-season average from 2007 to 2012.
