Tucked on the Ventura County border a good 23 miles from Hollywood and Vine, Calabasas is far beyond the reach of any celebrity tour bus and unplotted by most star maps. The city of 23,000 is built for privacy. About 40% of the homes are hidden behind guarded gates, and the priciest homes are protected behind a second set of gates accessible only by car-mounted transponder. Drawn by the seclusion and high-performing schools, actors, athletes and other A-listers have flocked to Calabasas and surrounding communities such as Hidden Hills over the years.

They're still coming and going in high school basketball, and the changing of players between Westlake and Calabasas is almost comedic. Earlier in the summer, Calabasas' Michael Hayon, a 6-foot-4 junior, transferred to Westlake. Little did anyone know he was part of a trade for future considerations. The player to be named later is standout senior guard Larry Bush, who enrolled at Calabasas on Monday, Coach Jon Palarz said. We'll see if there's more trades coming. Eric.sondheimer@latimes.com

Calabasas is known for its gated neighborhoods and its wealthy residents - people like Justin Bieber, Tommy Lee and Kourtney Kardashian. But for the last few years, the city's attention has been focused on people living in some of its oldest houses, built decades ago on the mountainous south side when the area was under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County. City officials are now cracking down on houses they consider substandard. Among the latest cases is 67-year-old Joanne Finazzo, whose home of 35 years was slapped with nearly two dozen code violations after city inspectors showed up to check on the septic system.

All high schools would be fortunate to have a No. 2 pitcher as talented as senior Chris Kovach of Simi Valley Royal. Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting is apparently counting on a marriage that will last a lifetime, committing to a tattoo commemorating the day she became Mrs. Ryan Sweeting. The actress and the tennis player got engaged only three months after meeting, and were married about three months after that in a New Year's Eve ceremony. It's that Dec. 31, 2013, date that's commemorated in Roman numerals tattooed between her shoulder blades. Cuoco-Sweeting, 28, gave the world a peek Saturday night in an exhibition tennis match that saw them wearing coordinating hot-pink-and-black tennis gear.

This is a letter of appreciation for your recognizing, at long last, that there is such a place as Calabasas and that we merit a little attention in the paper. I am delighted with West Valley Focus and the articles by Kurt Pitzer. It is the first place I look, and I am happy when I can read something about my city. I'll even forgive not having something in every day, although I am sure our dynamic up-and-coming 2 1/2-year-old Calabasas has many newsworthy items that could be written.

The driver and any passengers apparently escaped the bus before it caught fire on the right shoulder at around 4:10 p.m., said Officer Monica Posada of the California Highway Patrol. The eastbound lanes were shut down for about half an hour near the Mureau Road exit. It is not clear what caused the fire or whether the bus had crashed before the fire, Posada said.

Despite their aptly themed reality show, it really is hard to keep up with the Kardashians. Now Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick are trying to sell their home in Calabasas for $3.499 million. The listing comes on the heels of younger sister Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom putting their home in Tarzana up for sale at $5.499 million. Not to compare sisters, but Kourtney's boldly decorated house, with an assist from interior designer Jeff Andrews, is more playful than her sibling's.
