As of Friday, point guard Jeremy Lieberman of Calabasas said he was having trouble walking because of a severe ankle sprain on Tuesday in a semifinal playoff game. This is a letter of appreciation for your recognizing, at long last, that there is such a place as Calabasas and that we merit a little attention in the paper. I am delighted with West Valley Focus and the articles by Kurt Pitzer. It is the first place I look, and I am happy when I can read something about my city. I'll even forgive not having something in every day, although I am sure our dynamic up-and-coming 2 1/2-year-old Calabasas has many newsworthy items that could be written.

Calabasas is known for its gated neighborhoods and its wealthy residents - people like Justin Bieber, Tommy Lee and Kourtney Kardashian. But for the last few years, the city's attention has been focused on people living in some of its oldest houses, built decades ago on the mountainous south side when the area was under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County. City officials are now cracking down on houses they consider substandard. Among the latest cases is 67-year-old Joanne Finazzo, whose home of 35 years was slapped with nearly two dozen code violations after city inspectors showed up to check on the septic system.

The city of Calabasas makes it illegal to light up cigarettes in public spaces outdoors (March 18) -- that is so fabulous! It's not only that secondhand smoke is hazardous and downright offensive. Smokers for too long have treated the world as an ashtray. Too many times have we witnessed people extinguishing their cigarettes on the beach, on the sidewalk, at the park, at entryways, etc. Not only do they feel that is their right, they dump whole auto ashtrays onto parking lots and throw still-lighted cigarettes from their cars.
