Calabasas entered the era of community-based policing Thursday when it held the first meeting of its new Police Advisory Committee. The committee, made up of representatives from the community, city government and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, was created to tailor a law enforcement program for the city. "We want a sharper focus on community concerns," Councilman Marvin Lopata said.

Calabasas has hired a consultant to help determine if the city is receiving adequate library services from the Los Angeles county library system, or if it should take control of its tax monies and establish its own library. Arroyo Associates Inc., which was awarded the $20,000 contract Wednesday night, was selected from two finalists because of its experience in dealing with the county system and with other cities, Calabasas officials said.

A Calabasas-based graphics company has been chosen to design the year-old city's first logo--a simple symbol but apparently not a simple process. "It's a lot more complicated than people think," said Laurie Brecheen Ballard, co-owner of the Ballard Co., which has also produced logos for the Burbank Airport, Blue Cross of California and Los Angeles International Airport. Ballard said the process will take several months.
