Four Republicans and two Democrats entered the race Thursday for the 67th District Assembly seat, which will be vacated if former Assembly Speaker Doris Allen is recalled Nov. 28. Republicans Haydee V. Tillotson, Shirley Carey, Don MacAllister and Scott Baugh, along with Democrats Linda Moulton Patterson and Laurie Campbell, filed their candidacy papers by Thursday's deadline. They will appear on the ballot as candidates for Allen's seat alongside the recall ballot.

In yet another salvo in an increasingly hostile special election for the 67th Assembly District seat, Republican candidate William G. Steiner was accused Thursday of concealing the source of nearly $25,000 in campaign funds. Assemblyman Gil Ferguson (R-Newport Beach), who supports GOP candidate Mickey Conroy in Tuesday's special election, charged that Steiner illegally transferred the money to his Assembly campaign from accounts for two other campaign committees.

Usually underfunded and often underdogs, Orange County conservatives have nonetheless scored a string of election victories that continued this week with the surprise nomination of right-wing activist Mickey R. Conroy in a special Assembly election. Less than a week before Tuesday's election, private polls for the two leading candidates showed Conroy trailing moderate Republican William G. Steiner by at least 10% of the vote.

B. T. Collins, Gov. Pete Wilson's handpicked candidate, and retired Marine Corps pilot Mickey Conroy captured easy victories Tuesday to retain two Republicans strongholds in the state Assembly. The special elections pitted Collins against Libertarian David McCann in the 5th Assembly District, which covers parts of Sacramento and Placer counties. In the 67th District in Orange County, Conroy faced Democrat Greg Ramsay.

Conservative activist Mickey R. Conroy, a retired fighter pilot and outspoken critic of fellow Republican Gov. Pete Wilson, won a special election Tuesday for a seat in the state Assembly representing western Orange County. Conroy, who was a strong favorite to win the mostly Republican 67th Assembly District seat ever since he bested five other GOP candidates in a primary last July, defeated Democrat Greg R. Ramsay by a margin of more than 2 to 1.
