Bill Honig, state superintendent of public instruction, added three more southern California elementary schools to the list of 16 statewide which tampered with student answers on the 1986-87 California Assessment Program test scores. The new schools in which someone changed many wrong answers to right were Lincoln Elementary in the Compton Unified system, Liberty Elementary in Riverside Unified and Rancho San Diego Elementary in Cajon Valley Union District.

Nostalgia descends on most school campuses about this time of year as teachers watch children fly out the door for summer, bound for another grade in another classroom come September. But the sentiment will run especially thick when the last bell before vacation rings this afternoon at Wagon Wheel Elementary School in the outlying canyons of southeastern Orange County. There, both a community and its students have come of age during the past school year.

Three San Gabriel Valley elementary schools are among 10 Los Angeles County schools nominated for the National Elementary School Recognition Program sponsored by the U. S. Department of Education. Central Elementary School in the Baldwin Park Unified School District, Chaparral Elementary in the Claremont Unified School District and Valley View Elementary in the Duarte Unified School District are among 47 California elementary schools nominated.

Nine Southeast-area elementary schools have received the state's highest academic achievement award for student performance or exemplary educational programs. The institutions were among 206 California elementary schools to receive the California Distinguished School Award. It is the first year since 1989, when the state Department of Education halted the program because of budget cuts, that schools have been honored.

Four South Bay schools are among 250 from throughout the state that have been nominated for 1988-89 California Distinguished Elementary Schools Awards. They are Lincoln and Alta Vista in the Redondo Beach City Elementary School District and Anza and Walteria in the Torrance Unified School District. The nominees were picked from among nearly 4,600 schools statewide on the basis of such factors as test scores, program improvements and percentages of students enrolled in basic academic courses.

Five area middle schools are among California's best for 2001, the state Department of Education said this week, and two area elementary schools have been nominated for national recognition. Castaic Middle School, Eleanor J. Toll in Glendale, New Vista in Lancaster, George Ellery Hale in Woodland Hills and Walter Reed in North Hollywood are among the state education department's 157 California Distinguished Schools for 2001.
