Consumer Groups Sue Quackenbush Over Legal Fees: Consumer advocates who helped to defend Proposition 103 against legal challenges by the insurance industry said they had filed a lawsuit to keep Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush from blocking their recovery of legal fees. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, seeks to enforce an order issued by Quackenbush's predecessor, John Garamendi, awarding the groups some $550,000 in legal fees and other expenses.

In an unusual action, the state Senate Rules Committee has approved spending $10,000 in taxpayer funds for the defense of a retired colleague who is being sued for alleged violations of political reform laws. The committee voted 3 to 0 Thursday to help finance the defense of former state Sen. Cecil Green, who is accused in a civil lawsuit of failing to properly report campaign contributions and the sale of an airplane.
