The second floor of Titan Gym is the practice home of 11 chalk-dusted women who are the nation's fifth-ranked gymnastics team. On campus, they have another claim to fame: They are ranked No. 1 in grade-point average among all Cal State Fullerton teams. For 12 years in a row, the women's gymnastics team didn't know what it was like to finish lower than fifth in the nation. The past two seasons, the team has learned. Fullerton finished 13th last season, not even in the top 20 the year before.

A sexual harassment settlement that may be the largest of its kind ever paid by the California State University system has come to light in a related lawsuit filed last week. The university paid close to $500,000 last year to settle the sexual harassment lawsuit brought by Cal State Fullerton employee Pamela Losco. Now her brother David, the former personnel director for the campus, alleges in a lawsuit that he was demoted for helping his sister with her suit.

It had been a frustrating day for Cal State Fullerton. But all that changed in the ninth inning Friday when pinch-hitter Sean Bischofberger drilled a two-run single with the bases loaded, lifting the Titans to a 6-5 victory over Michigan in the NCAA regional baseball playoffs at Notre Dame. The No. 1-seeded Titans (45-11) were on the verge of an embarrassing first-round defeat before rallying for three runs in the ninth against the fourth-seeded Wolverines.

Milton A. Gordon was formally invested Friday as the fourth president of Cal State Fullerton while more than three dozen university employees held banners in silent protest over the worst layoffs in campus history. The solemn ritual, which has its roots in centuries-old academic tradition, was the most austere in the history of the 33-year-old university.

With tuition costs continuing to climb, Cal State Fullerton students have at least gotten a break on health care, thanks to an on-campus health center that has offered a range of services at low or no cost. No longer. University officials say they will have to charge fees for some health care as early as the spring semester, which begins in February.

The final score from the Silver Bowl in Las Vegas Saturday was UNLV, 33, Cal State Fullerton 16. That much we know. What we don't know: How final a score was it? Cal State Fullerton President Milton Gordon will provide the answer some time in the next two weeks, and for those huddled Titan football supporters out there--the Silenced Minority--the outlook certainly isn't brilliant. Best-case scenario: Gordon brings football back, but downgrades it to Division I-AA "cost-containment" ball.
