That evening I spoke with my daughter, who teaches in a middle school in San Francisco. She is teaching a class in English as a Second Language in a room with only one chair (for teacher). Hundreds of Californians, many of them elderly and nearly broke, are pressing legislators for help in getting compensation for some of the money they lost in a Ponzi scheme run by confessed swindler Bernard Madoff.
