Ventura County's elected leaders were divided Friday over a state proposal to replace female teens incarcerated at a youth correctional facility in Camarillo, possibly with boys or low-risk adult male prisoners. Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero (D-Los Angeles) last week amended her bill, which seeks to move female offenders in the juvenile justice system to less expensive community programs where they can receive education and rehabilitation programs.

Two motorists sustained broken bones and minor injuries during a head-on collision Tuesday in a rural area south of Camarillo, the California Highway Patrol said. Armidia Chavez, 46, of Port Hueneme lost control of her car about 8 a.m., while trying to pass another vehicle heading north on Lewis Road near Cawelti Road, said Officer Steve Reid. Chavez did not have enough time to pass the other car on the two-lane road and struck Sako Kalbak, 41, of Camarillo, who was traveling south, Reid said.

Ventura County sheriff's officials are investigating the details of a high-speed pursuit over the weekend that resulted in the death of a Camarillo father of six. Stephen Paul Aguirre, 39, was on his way to the driving range at Camarillo Springs Golf Course on Sunday morning when he was broadsided by a Nissan Maxima traveling up to 80 mph. A Ventura County sheriff's deputy had spotted motorist David Inder Bagai, 30, driving erratically and was in pursuit at the time.

The California Highway Patrol is seeking the public's help in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run accident last week on the Ventura Freeway. CHP officials said the accident occurred Thursday morning when a motorist driving north in Camarillo suddenly changed lanes and struck a motorcyclist, who suffered fatal head injuries.

A rape suspect who threatened to stab himself to death was arrested early Monday by Ventura County sheriff's deputies following a six-hour standoff at his Camarillo home. Gary Scott Moneta, 21, was booked on suspicion of rape, false imprisonment and criminal threats. The incident began just after 6 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Spanish Moss Place, officials said.

A Northridge woman was fatally stabbed Tuesday on a Malibu-area beach and four inmates who escaped from a California Youth Authority facility in Camarillo were being sought in the killing, authorities said. Jacqueline Kirkham, 43, died from several stab wounds to the upper body, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy George Ducoulombier said. She was found in a public restroom at Zuma Beach County Park at about 4 p.m. by passersby and taken to a hospital where she died, the deputy said.

The Red Cross said thieves have stolen gas out of its vans at least seven times in six months. Most cases involved siphoning the fuel, but on Tuesday someone cut the fuel line of a Red Cross van, spokeswoman Debra Creadick said. Repairs will cost about $150, she said. No arrests have been made. Local Red Cross officials are considering security options, including installing surveillance cameras to keep watch on the parked vans, Creadick said.

Plans for a major development approved by Camarillo should be halted because the city did not require homes for people with extremely low incomes, according to a lawsuit filed in Ventura County Superior Court. "In terms of the amount of very low-income housing that's needed and the amount that's been built, the city is way out of whack," said Barbara Macri-Ortiz, an Oxnard attorney representing two low-income Camarillo residents and a low-income former resident.
