Five environmental whiz kids from Camarillo High School have taken first place in a statewide academic competition, earning them a chance to compete against teams from across the country this summer in Massachusetts. This is the third state championship in a row for the school's Envirothon team, which finished 10th at national finals last year. "I am so excited, to compete and just to travel across the country," said senior Maggie Valliant, 17.

Prosecutors have added six felony counts to the growing case against a Camarillo High School teacher accused of sexual misconduct with male students, bringing the total number of alleged victims to 11. Deputy Dist. Atty. Douglas Ridley is also pushing to increase bail for Chad Wenzlick Pridgen, alleging the 30-year-old science teacher and coach violated the conditions of his release on $250,000 bail last month.

A Camarillo High School teacher accused of committing sex crimes against nine male students was released from Ventura County Jail on bail Friday. Chad Wenzlick Pridgen posted a $250,000 bond and was released, jail officials said. On Wednesday, in a courtroom packed with more than 50 supportive parents, students and teachers, a judge denied a bid by Pridgen's attorneys to lower the bail amount to $50,000.

In a courtroom packed with supportive students and parents, a Camarillo High School teacher pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he tried to seduce or had sexual relations with nine male students in the last two years. Chad Wenzlick Pridgen, a 30-year-old science teacher and coach, faces 33 misdemeanor and felony counts. Charges include supplying teenagers with alcohol, showing them pornography and forcing teenage boys to perform oral sex on him.

A Camarillo High School teacher accused of sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old student was charged Thursday with multiple felony counts involving four other teenage boys. Prosecutors filed a 19-count complaint against Chad Wenzlick Pridgen, 30, three days after the science teacher and tennis coach was arrested on suspicion of trying to seduce a minor using pornography. A dozen of the charges allege oral copulation with a minor, including one forced incident.

A Camarillo High School science teacher and coach has been arrested on suspicion of using pornography to seduce a 17-year-old male student and behaving lewdly in front of the teenager, authorities said Wednesday. Chad Wenzlick Pridgen, 30, was in Ventura County Jail on $250,000 bail Wednesday after Sheriff's Department investigators arrested him Tuesday night in his Camarillo home. Authorities also seized several items from the house.

Oxnard Union High School District leaders tonight will consider approving $16.5 million in much-needed renovations at the district's four oldest high schools. The out-of-date facilities--particularly at Adolfo Camarillo High School--have long been a source of contention between parents and district officials. The dissension at Camarillo was aggravated last year by the opening of the sprawling, $55-million Pacifica High School in Oxnard.

A 14-year-old member of the Camarillo High School cross-country team died early Wednesday after being struck by a car while jogging along Santa Rosa Road with her father, who called for an immediate reduction of traffic speeds in the area. Jennifer Lynn Bonds, a freshman member of the varsity team, was pronounced dead at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks from massive head injuries. She had been struck about 4:30 p.m.

It was supposed to be a duel of aces, but Alex Merricks of Oxnard High found that he was battling more than Jim Alstot of Camarillo. Merricks, a junior left-hander who is among the region's strikeout leaders, struggled to control his fastball, walking seven batters and striking out eight in three innings.

At the start of his junior season Ralph Garcia of Camarillo High wasn't the best in the region in his weight class. Nearly two years later, Garcia is the best wrestler in the region. Garcia, The Times' wrestler of the year, competed against the best athletes in the state each weekend, won his second consecutive Southern Section Division IV title and finished seventh at the state championships in March.
