She came to our attention as likable sultry lounge singer Tina in “The Mask” and the irresistibly sweet Mary from the Farrelly brothers' “There's Something About Mary.” In the years that followed, Cameron Diaz played endearing to perfection, even and especially when she was playing a sex symbol. Though she may have been kicking butt, she was doing it in the name of good (“Charlie's Angels”) and even when she was an irresponsible party girl with a Peter Pan complex, she still made us root for her (“In Her Shoes”)

In the new revenge comedy "The Other Woman," Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton play a trio of scorned women seeking to give their cheating mutual beau (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) his comeuppance. According to film critics, though, they would have been better off directing their ire at the movie itself, for its lazy cliches and pseudo-feminist slant. The Times' Betsy Sharkey calls "The Other Woman" the "quintessential anti-date movie" - ironic, as it's directed by Nick Cassavetes, who did "The Notebook" - and says it's "out of control and intent on running down a certain kind of male.

Cameron Diaz has been cast in the new film version of the musical "Annie" in the role of Miss Hannigan, which might have some scratching their heads. Will this mean a sexy villain? Other actresses who have ably filled the role of Miss Hannigan aren't without an alluring side -- Dorothy Loudon, Carol Burnett, Katie Finneran, Jane Lynch, etc. But can you picture them as Charlie's Angels? Perhaps Diaz will give Miss Hannigan a whole new spin. PHOTOS: Cameron Diaz career in pictures As the Los Angeles Times' Steve Zeitchik notes, Diaz is mid-transformation . On screen, the 40-year-old actress has kicked butt and partied and been both sweet and sultry, but in more recent years she seems to be honing her edge.

Even Kate Upton can be uncomfortable in a bathing suit. Specifically, while running on a beach in a skimpy white bikini for her first feature film role in "The Other Woman. " So why is the multiple Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue model , who recently complained that she wished she had smaller breasts , concerned about the scene? "It was funny because when we were filming that scene, you know, whenever you go to a beach, everyone's wearing bikinis, so it's just pretty normal.

They say if you want something done right, do it yourself. That approach just worked for Cameron Diaz, who represented her upcoming movie "The Other Woman" and successfully appealed the MPAA's Classification and Rating Appeals Board to overturn its initial R rating. The film is now rated PG-13 for "mature thematic material, sexual references and language," CARA announced Wednesday. Emma Watts, president of production at 20th Century Fox, represented the film with Diaz in the appeal process.

In Cameron Diaz's latest comedy, “The Other Woman,” the 41-year-old plays a woman seeking revenge against her boyfriend after discovering he has a wife and a girlfriend. Tsk, tsk. In real life, Diaz says, infidelity unfortunately strikes us all. "Everybody has been cheated on, everyone will be cheated on,” she told Britain's OK! magazine (via the New York Daily News). “I can't fix that, I don't know how, I don't have any judgment on anybody, I don't know how to fix the problem.” The blond actress has dated high-profile celebrities including Jared Leto, Justin Timberlake and Alex Rodriguez.

Reese Witherspoon and Cameron Diaz joined gal pal Drew Barrymore and others for a "girls trip" in Napa Valley this week that's giving us major culinary envy. The A-listers headed up to the Northern California wine country on Wednesday for what Witherspoon, 37, dubbed #girlstrip2014 , or what we want to refer to as "Charlie's Angels" meets "Eat Pray Love" with a dash of "Julie and Julia" and some "Legally Blonde" mixed in for good measure. The leading ladies took a cooking class at the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena , just north of Napa, at the majestic Greystone property.

We're talking to Cameron Diaz on her cellphone, and she's dishing about her action-oriented exploits with Tom Cruise in her upcoming movie "Knight and Day," when she asks us to hold for a moment. Muffled in the background, we hear men shouting, "Cameron! Cameron! A-Rod? Cameron!" and then she's back on the line, explaining what happened. Paparazzi. Flashes. Brief mention of New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, whom Diaz is rumored to be dating. "That's my daily action sequence," Diaz says, laughing.

A photographer was charged Wednesday with trying to extort $3.3 million from Cameron Diaz in connection with photos taken before she became a Hollywood star. John Rutter, 41, arrested Tuesday, is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail. He has also been charged with grand theft, perjury and forgery. Diaz, 30, sued the Venice photographer to stop the release of bare-breasted photos taken of the "Charlie's Angels" star during a private modeling session more than a decade ago.

The new comedy “What to Expect When You're Expecting” promises two sure things moviegoers can expect: lots of babies and lots of pregnant women. Babies and baby bumps were less common, however, at the movie's black carpet premiere Monday at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, though there were appearances from a pregnant Melissa Joan Hart, expecting her third child, and the twins who played the baby adopted by Jennifer Lopez's character in the film. Among the leading cast members, Lopez alone has given birth in real life, but the production gave her costars a taste of the pregnancy experience - though for some it was less than realistic.

Director Nick Cassavetes, whose soft touch with romance was behind that classic date movie "The Notebook," is now responsible for the quintessential anti-date movie - "The Other Woman. " There is no question whose side he is on in this little bit of rasty business starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton. My advice to guys? Step away from the vehicle, because "The Other Woman" is out of control and intent on running down a certain kind of male. Even if you're not the lying, cheating, thieving type - that would be Mark, a slickster played by "Game of Thrones'" Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, juggling wife, mistress, other mistress and some other ill-gotten gains - there is bound to be collateral damage.

Based on the 2011 Cameron Diaz film of the same name, "Bad Teacher" is something of a novelty on CBS, a single-camera comedy in a sea of old-fashioned multicamera, feel-the-hilarity sitcoms like "The Big Bang Theory," "Two Broke Girls" and "Mike & Molly. " ("The Crazy Ones," whose time slot "Bad Teacher" will occupy, cracked that mold this season but did not break it.) Nevertheless, and for all the studied outrageousness of its model, it tells a now-familiar, deceptively sweet tale of the unruly force that brings its own kind of order and relief.

Diazed and Confused: Cameron Diaz is reportedly so tired of the media that she has ceased reading newspapers, according to Olympia Daily World, a radio tip sheet. That's a shame because today is The Times' once-a-century sweepstakes, in which we randomly select a citizen and award them $40 million if they see their name in the paper and call in. The big winner is Cameron Diaz. Too bad she won't see this. We were even going to throw in dinner with Off-Kilter (a $10 value).

Diazed and Confused, Part II: We are never going to trust this column again. Just the other day, for example, we relayed a report that Cameron Diaz was so tired of the media that she no longer reads newspapers. Thus, we assumed it was safe to add that The Times had randomly selected her as the winner of its "once-a-century sweepstakes," in which a lucky citizen gets $40 million if she spots her name in the paper and calls in.

Appearances to the contrary, actress Cameron Diaz wasn't always the picture of health. A few months of kung fu training changed all that, and now she's written a guide for women to make smart decisions about their bodies. For Diaz, "The Body Book" is about dispelling confusion and letting people know how things work from the eyebrows on down. What motivated you to write "The Body Book"? Two years ago I was 39 and having conversations with other women my age, and they kept saying the same things about how they were confused about their bodies and how to get them to where they wanted to be. I thought it was crazy that someone could live their whole life in their own body and not know how it works.
