When Rick Sabosky learned that El Segundo High was moving to the Camino Real League in basketball, he did what any rational coach would. He considered resigning. The thought of a small public school playing St. Bernard, St. Monica, St. Anthony, Serra and Verbum Dei--traditionally among Southern California's top basketball schools--didn't strike him as particularly appealing. Or fair. As it turned out, Sabosky didn't quit.

Upset Serra High officials may appeal a vote by Camino Real League principals designating Serra as the league's No. 3 entry in the Southern Section Division VIII football playoffs, despite the fact the Cavaliers finished in a three-way tie for first. Serra, St. Monica and Cantwell all finished league play with 5-1 records. According to league rules, three-way ties are broken by coin flips when head-to-head results fail to determine a No. 1 playoff entry, as in this case. Serra beat St.

St. Bernard 62, Verbum Dei 61--Sophomore forward Chris Keldorf, taking an inbounds pass from Terry Sullivan on the right wing, hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to lift the Vikings to a Camino Real League victory at home. Center Wyking Jones scored 19 points and guard Martin Smith added 15 for St. Bernard, which snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 10-10 overall and 5-5 in the league. Verbum Dei fell to 7-11 and 4-6. St.

El Segundo and St. Bernard, the top two baseball teams from the Camino Real League, will resume action in the CIF-Southern Section 2-A playoffs Friday in quarterfinal games at 3:15 p.m. Camino Real League champion El Segundo (23-5), the No. 2 seed, will meet La Canada (14-8) at El Segundo Recreation Park, while Camino Real runner-up St. Bernard (20-5), the No. 4 seed, plays at San Marino (20-3). San Marino and La Canada compete in the Rio Hondo League, the only league that has all three of its 2-A playoff entries alive.
