A candlelight vigil was held Sunday night for victims of a fiery car crash in Burbank that left five people dead and one injured. The single-car crash occurred at about 4:10 a.m. Saturday near the Scott Road offramp of the 5 Freeway. In a statement, Burbank police said it appeared that the Nissan involved in the crash was traveling south on San Fernando Boulevard at a high rate of speed, lost control and slammed into a concrete abutment. Officers who arrived at the scene found the sedan ablaze, authorities said.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Wednesday to honor Jennifer Bonilla,  a student from Dorsey High School who was among those killed in a bus crash in Northern California last week.  The vigil will begin at 5 p.m. at Dorsey High School, 3537 Farmdale Avenue in the Crenshaw area. WHO THEY WERE: Orland bus crash victims Jennifer, a 17-year-old senior, died last week in the crash that claimed 10 lives. Five of them, including Jennifer, were students on their way to a college tour of Humboldt State University.

Elvis Presley fans numbering in the thousands outside Graceland to mark the 35th anniversary of his death got quite the surprise Wednesday evening when the King's former wife and daughter -- Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley -- showed up for the annual candlelight vigil at the cultural icon's estate in Memphis, Tenn. Mother and daughter have largely avoided the hoopla surrounding the Aug. 16, 1977, death that has turned into an annual celebration of all things Elvis but remains a personal time of pain for them.

A shooting in Duarte left a 16-year-old boy dead Monday night, the third episode of gun violence to hit the city in two days. Details of the latest shooting and a description of the victim were not immediately available, but the apartment complex where homicide detectives responded at about 11:45 p.m. is within a few miles of where the other recent shootings occurred. The incidents began early Sunday, when 18-year-old Malcolm Mency was shot and killed while walking home from work.

As Los Angeles County and union negotiators bargained in a building on the grounds of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Tuesday evening, more than 100 county workers held a candlelight vigil outside the downtown landmark and called on the county to meet their demands. “Let's make some noise for those upstairs to let them know we're here and we will not be moved,” the Rev. William Smart of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference cried into a bullhorn, addressing members of SEIU 721, the largest public-employee union in the county.

Oxnard residents will hold a second annual candlelight vigil Saturday night in honor of young people who have died in gang-related violence. The vigil, scheduled from 4:30 to 6 p.m., will take place at Oxnard Plaza Park, in the 300 block of West 5th Street. Oxnard has recorded 17 homicides this year, contrasted with 11 last year. The vigil is organized by local activist groups that formed in response to the violence--Community for Unity, Save Our Sons and the Faith Connection.

The Ventura County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is planning several activities to commemorate Victim's Rights Week, including a candlelight vigil remembering those killed by drunk drivers, officials said. A candlelight vigil in memory of a slain Redondo Beach woman will be held Friday at 4:30 p.m. in Redondo Beach. Madolyn Smink, 51, was discovered dead in the trunk of her car Dec. 19. Police have not released any information about their investigation. They have not announced a cause of death. The vigil, to be held at Glenn Anderson Park, was organized by Citizens Against Crime, a Redondo Beach-based group that works to help prevent crime by raising awareness and increasing citizen involvement.

A worker was trapped in an underground vault that erupted in flames in Huntington Beach on Monday afternoon. There was no immediate word on the worker's condition. Contract workers for Southern California Edison were in the vault at Tisbury Circle and Mistral Drive in Huntington Harbour when the accident happened about 12:17 p.m. Several workers, who were called to a scheduled outage in the neighborhood, escaped from the vault. One did not. Smoke could be seen rising from the vault and rescue workers were waiting for Edison to turn off power to the vault before entering.

A 45-year-old Anaheim man died after he fell backward from a sidewalk and was struck by an Orange County Transportation Authority bus, authorities said Monday. The incident occurred Sunday about 6 p.m. on Beach Boulevard north of McFadden Avenue in Midway City, an unincorporated community in central Orange County. The man's name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, said California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Barton. The bus driver had parked at the curb after making a stop and waited approximately 15 seconds before pulling into traffic, Barton said.

Members of a Vietnamese LGBT group closely followed the U.S. Supreme Court hearing Tuesday, anxious about the eventual outcome and hopeful that it will help change deeply rooted feelings about gay rights in the immigrant community. “I'm excited that this issue has reached the highest level of the law. I only hope our immigrant families can learn more so they can open themselves up more," said Hieu Nguyen, a social worker from Garden Grove and a member of Partnership of Viet LGBT Organizations.

Re "Feinstein assault weapons ban fails," March 20 We all owe Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) great thanks for her pursuit of a federal assault weapons ban, but it is quite clear that if the horrific massacre in Connecticut in December didn't persuade Senate Republicans that these murder weapons should not be sold, nothing will. The only solution is to vote Republicans out of office and replace them with senators who can exercise common sense. I hope that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.)

Authorities on Friday were searching for a 20-year-old man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a Coastal Carolina University student in the parking lot of the South Carolina school's residence complex. Marquis Spencer McDonald, 20, was named as the suspect in Tuesday's shooting that left Anthony Darnell Liddell , 19, dead, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Liddell, a sophomore from Bennettsville, S.C., was shot once in the chest, the county coroner said.
