TUESDAY'S RESULT Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 4, Orange Lutheran 0 Top contributors: Senior left-hander Tyler Matzek pitched six scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking three in the Southern Section Division I second-round game at Hart Park in Orange. Junior right-hander Andrew Thurman, who has committed to UC Irvine, gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

Of the 11,588 who showed up Saturday at Angel Stadium for four Southern Section championship baseball games and stuck around for the Division I final, they were left with a breathless, hard-to-believe ending that featured Orange County's next millionaire, Tyler Matzek, turning in an unforgettable performance.

John Davis overcame a hand injury suffered in the semifinals to pitch Riverside Woodcrest Christian past top-seeded Lancaster Paraclete, 6-1, in the Southern Section Division 5 championship baseball game on Saturday at the Riverside Sports Complex. Davis needed nine stitches after he was spiked on his throwing hand in a semifinal victory over Hemet Tahquitz. But he struck out seven and allowed six hits against Paraclete. In the Division 6 final, Lancaster Desert Christian won its first title after a 4-2, eight-inning victory over Capistrano Valley Christian.

With a signing bonus of several million dollars at stake, hard-throwing left-hander Tyler Matzek of Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley is going to face lots of pressure situations over the next three months. He already has been tested off the diamond, whether dealing with the constant scrutiny and questions from major league scouts or the tumultuous highs and lows when his father was hospitalized with throat cancer.

There has been so much talk about the supposed demise of City Section basketball this season that some people actually believed it. What happened Saturday at the Nike Extravaganza at Santa Ana Mater Dei will put an end to such nonsense. Woodland Hills Taft, emerging as the City Section Division I title favorite, routed Southern Section power Los Angeles Loyola, 73-57. Fairfax defeated Rialto Eisenhower, 73-67. And Westchester defeated Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, 45-42. "I think it means the City is still strong and can still compete with the big dogs," Taft guard Steven Jones said.
