A sweeping patients' rights bill gained momentum Tuesday as Senate Democrats won critical votes over the measure's foes and neared compromise on key sticking points. Amid these signs pointing toward Senate passage of the bill, President Bush stepped up his involvement in the debate. He followed up his recent threats to veto the measure with calls to at least three centrist lawmakers; White House aides said it was the start of a personal lobbying campaign to encourage efforts to produce a compromise that he can sign.

Two weeks after Clear Channel Communications announced the launch of Music Information Systems, the executive hired to run the new division has quit to take another job. Dan Hubbert, named MIS senior vice president June 15, confirmed Tuesday that he is jumping ship to head the promotion department at EMI Group's Capitol Records. Clear Channel plans to sell airplay data gathered from its 1,200 stations to record labels through an array of in-house monitoring services under the MIS umbrella.
