National Heath Care Systems of Irvine posted a modest profit for 1988 after a loss the year before. Net income was $57,277, contrasted with a loss of $212,367 for 1987. The company's revenue rose 28% to $5.1 million from $4 million. "The company's dental plan membership has approximately doubled from the prior fiscal year to 156,000 members throughout the state of California," said Dr. Carl E. Bozzo, chairman and chief executive. The company operates a prepaid dental plan called DentiCare that has about 156,000 members throughout California.

National Health Care Systems Inc. said Tuesday that it has won a contract to provide dental coverage for the 6,700 members of the California Ironworkers Union. The two-year-contract will be worth $1 million to $2 million, National Health Chairman Carl E. Bozzo said. National Health, based in Laguna Niguel, owns DentiCare, the third-largest dental health maintenance organization in California, with over 360,000 members. On Nov. 25, National Health will be merged into Foundation Health Care Inc.

DentiCare of California Inc., a dental health maintenance organization based here, has finalized a $22.8-million merger with Foundation Health Corp. of Sacramento, the companies said Monday. DentiCare President Carl E. Bozzo said the merged entity plans to expand by acquiring other dental HMOs and a vision plan company this year. DentiCare now has 375,000 members, and hopes to have 1 million members by 1994, Bozzo said. Foundation Health Corp. is a medical HMO with 1.2 million members.

National Health Care Systems, an Irvine-based prepaid dental health-management organization, and Best Life Assurance Co. of California, a Laguna Hills insurance company, have begun to jointly market their dental plans. Under a joint-venture agreement, the companies are offering California employers an opportunity to buy both a prepaid dental plan and more traditional fee-for-service insurance from one vendor to give their employees a broader choice of dental insurance coverage.

Casey to fill it. Casey had been working as a consultant to National Health since September and was named to the new position Jan. 1. He will take over some day-to-day duties from Dr. Carl E. Bozzo, board chairman and chief executive officer, who will retain those titles.

The company that provides managed care dental services to 112,000 indigent Medi-Cal recipients in Los Angeles County has challenged a harshly critical state audit report, contending that the state made gross calculation and interpretation errors. The company, Laguna Niguel-based Denticare of California, said the mistakes led the Department of Health Services to draw erroneous conclusions in its June 16 audit report.

In a withering audit report, the state Department of Health Services has accused California's third-largest dental plan of practices that have effectively cheated thousands of indigent Medi-Cal enrollees out of proper care. The audit--prompted by a whistle-blowing former employee--cited DentiCare for denying some Medi-Cal recipients access to dental care, needlessly delaying care to others and improperly diverting fees from dentists into the company's coffers.
