The U.S. national volleyball team lost its third consecutive match Sunday as Japan defeated the Americans, 15-12, 10-15, 15-4, 15-10, at Osaka, Japan. Outside hitters Carlos Briceno of Fountain Valley and Nick Becker of Newport Beach had 24 and 15 kills, respectively. Huntington Beach's Dan Hanan added 14 kills and five blocks. Bob Samuelson of Playa del Rey led the United States with 38 kills.

Banding together behind their bald teammate, Bob Samuelson, the entire U.S. Olympic volleyball squad, angry over the reversal of their five-game victory over Japan on Sunday,voted Monday to show up for the next match with shaved heads, The Times has learned.

David Rottman had 25 kills in 51 attempts Saturday night to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 15-12, 15-11, 13-15, 15-10 victory over Hawaii in the championship game of the NCAA West Regional volleyball tournament at UC Irvine's Bren Center. UCSB, the second-seeded team in the tournament, also had 17 kills from Jose Gandara and 13 kills from Lee Nelson as it beat the top-seeded Rainbows. Jon Wallace chipped in with 80 assists for the Gauchos (27-10).

Both the women's Team Norelco and the men's Team OP will try to extend their winning streaks to three tournaments at the Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League event beginning today at Huntington Beach. Women's competition begins at 10 a.m. and continues Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The women's final is at 1 p.m. Saturday and will be shown live on ESPN. Men's competition begins at 2 p.m. Saturday and continues Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. The men's final is at 3 p.m.

Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh, who were anything but favorites coming into the U.S. Olympic beach volleyball trials, buried the second-seeded team of Randy Stoklos and Adam Johnson, 15-7, to become the first men's team to qualify for the Games. The third-seeded team's victory erased the doubts of many who considered their victory Friday over top-seeded Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes a fluke.
