That might have been the main message in an American Trucking Assn. report released Tuesday that referred to four separate studies of accidents involving truckers and regular motorists. In one such study of more than 8,300 fatal accidents performed by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, the drivers of cars and other light vehicles were assigned blame in 81% of the accidents. Cars "were the encroaching vehicle in 89% of head-on crashes, 88% of opposite-direction sideswipes, 80% of rear-end crashes, and 72% of same-direction sideswipes," the report said.

It's Pixar Animation's 25th anniversary, and the studio has kicked back and given a present to itself and its ever-expanding audience with the genially entertaining "Cars 2. I had no intention of employing that device when I recently wrote - quite sincerely - in defense of motorcyclists who navigate the space between cars...

Despite a three-fold increase in people and cars in the last 50 years, California's strict vehicle emissions standards have managed to significantly clear the state's air, according to new research. The study also found that Southern California's air chemistry has changed for the better. The amount of organic nitrates in the atmosphere - which cause smog's eye-stinging irritation - has drastically fallen off, according to federal researchers. Ozone and other pollutants have been monitored in the state since the 1960s.
