For years we've heard rumblings that the Internet will displace television. That rumor moved one step closer to reality this week when the primarily TV-based Cartoon Network extended its programming to the Web (http://www.cartoonnetwork.com) and introduced two interactive, online cartoons.

Laura MILLER must be living a grim and unimaginable life to be so disturbed by the Jack Bauer character played by Kiefer Sutherland in "24." In her effort to attack "24," Miller instantly loses any credibility by acknowledging "24" is "a bona fide hit." Why is she so angry that "24" appeals to a wide audience that is quite satisfied with the show, its characters, plotlines and locations? She complains that there is no fun? She should try watching the Cartoon Network if she needs some "fun" in her life.

Splashy music, schmaltzy tributes, rambling speeches from two-dimensional characters. Yep, it's Oscar weekend, but think of this as a warmup for Sunday's extravaganza: The Cartoon Network presents a slightly tongue-in-cheek praise-fest of its own tonight at 7, the "1st 13th Annual Fancy Anvil Award Show Program Special ... Live! ... In Stereo."

Cartoon Network has long played with the mythology of its beloved characters. In clever promos and elaborate specials like the ones it would concoct around Super Bowl time, the network would mix and match its animated roster with a cutting modern wit. The channel had never actually gone to court, though, until now. The network has dusted off one of Hanna-Barbera's worst-conceived superhero characters, Birdman, and given him new life, as was done for Space Ghost before him.
