The starting pitchers for today's Angels-Yankees game have a combined 2009 salary of $23.4 million; CC Sabathia of the Yankees will make $23 million, and Matt Palmer of the Angels will make $400,000, as long as he remains in the major leagues. "That's funny, now that you mention it," said Palmer, a 30-year-old right-hander who has made all of four big league starts. "It does seem a little extravagant. I won't think about that [today], but in the big picture, I'm a little smaller than him."

If the Dodgers sign CC Sabathia, don't count on them to re-sign Manny Ramirez. Asked whether it would be possible to sign the two superstar free agents who could command annual salaries in excess of $20 million each, General Manager Ned Colletti replied, "I think that would be difficult." Sabathia received an offer from the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend that is believed to be worth about $100 million, according to multiple reports. He is expected to fetch more on the open market.

The Angels, unwilling to meet Mark Teixeira's desire for a 10-year contract, are in discussions with CC Sabathia and could offer him a contract that approaches the $140-million bid extended to him by the New York Yankees. The Angels appear reluctant to guarantee more than seven years in a contract for Teixeira, said a source familiar with the club's thinking. They appear more likely at this time to pursue Sabathia, with an offer in the range of Johan Santana's six-year, $137.
