Five of the eight teams for the NCAA Division II football playoffs were selected Tuesday, led by undefeated and top-ranked defending champion North Dakota State. The others are UC Davis, Troy (Ala.) State, Central State, Ohio and South Dakota. Of the five, all but South Dakota will play host to first-round games on Nov. 29. The remaining three teams and the pairings for the games will be picked Sunday in a telephone conference by the Division II Football Committee.

When Clarence (Big House) Gaines first settled into the physical education department at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina 44 years ago, he wasn't thinking of setting records. He just wanted to become a good assistant coach. "I came down here in 1945 to help a guy who was coaching everything," said Gaines. "Actually, I think I'm a much better football coach than a basketball coach."
