Cherokee Parks of Huntington Beach Marina High and Tamika Phillips of Chaffey High have been selected the top boy and girl high school basketball players of the year in Southern California by The Times. The two were honored Sunday at a banquet at the Anaheim Sheraton. Parks, a 6-foot-11 center, was presented the George Yardley Award, and Phillips, a 6-foot center/forward, was presented the Cheryl Miller Award. This is the first year those awards have been given.

Vice President Al Gore will appear at 7 tonight at a town meeting at Chaffey High School in Ontario, after President Clinton concludes his town hall meeting in Detroit. Gore plans to talk about the economy and the Clinton Administration's plans for reducing unemployment, cutting the federal budget deficit and increasing investment in the nation's future, according to an aide. Tickets are being distributed by the school, which is choosing the participants by lottery.

Quarterback Rich Fuentes passed for 187 yards and two touchdowns to lead Rancho Cucamonga past Orange Lutheran, 38-3, in a nonleague football opener Thursday night at Chaffey High School. Fuentes put the Cougars on the board early with a 32-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Reed, capitalizing on a fumbled snap by Orange Lutheran punter Brandon Back. Jeremy Chilton added a one-yard touchdown run to give Rancho Cucamonga a 14-0 with 3 minutes 54 seconds left in the first quarter.

A new principal has been hired at Brea Olinda High School. The former principal, John Johnson, was removed from the post two months ago after failing to tell school district officials about widespread grade changes. Kathy Beard, currently an assistant principal at Chaffey High School in Ontario, was selected Tuesday during a closed-session meeting of the Board of Education.

Alta Loma's defense came up big in the closing minutes Thursday night and the Braves, ranked 18th in the region by The Times, defeated Upland, 19-14, in a nonleague game at Chaffey High School. Upland's Josh Carle recovered a fumble and returned it to Alta Loma's eight-yard line with 5:29 remaining in the game. But the Highlanders (1-3) failed to score on four consecutive runs by Geramie Bascomb.

Three teenagers suspected in the fatal shooting of an 89-year-old man at an Ontario park last week will be tried as adults, officials at the San Bernardino County district attorney's office said Tuesday. Jamal Tyron Rhone of Ontario, Fredrick Melvin Stewart and Trayvon Andrew Patterson, both of Rancho Cucamonga, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of first-degree mur- der, attempted robbery and participation in a criminal street gang.
