Re "Spotlight on film safety," March 22 The father of Sarah Jones, who was killed last month after being struck by a train during a film shoot in Georgia, told me he prays that his daughter's death will not be in vain. He said no film or TV show is worth the risk she faced. I write these words on a Saturday morning while many film workers are driving home after another 14- or 15-hour shift. We call this "Fraturday," a Friday film shoot that often extends into the wee hours of Saturday.

TECOPA, Calif. - Under a canopy of gleaming stars, Janet Foley made her way across a dab of marshlands surrounded by harsh Mojave Desert terrain, her headlamp fixed on a live trap the size of a loaf of bread. She peered inside, smiled and said, "Hi there, cutie. " The creature staring back at her was a federally endangered Amargosa vole, one of the rarest mammals in North America. Foley recorded its vital statistics, attached an identification tag to its right ear and released it back into the wild.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The NFL set scoring and yardage records last season - the league loves that - and had all the hallmarks of competitive balance, including 48% of games that were decided by seven points or fewer, the fourth-most in history. But, as is typical this time of year, there's a push from teams to further tweak the rules. The ideas might be legitimate improvements, or maybe just superfluous tinkering, but that's for team owners to decide at this week's annual meetings, a three-day event at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Orlando.

In movies and television shows, undercover cops running prostitution stings bring out the handcuffs as soon as there's an agreement to exchange money for a sex act. They don't usually wait to receive the service. But police in Hawaii have said they need the flexibility to have sex with prostitutes and have fought to save a state law that has allowed them to do so. Civil rights groups and victims' advocates called that position ridiculous. “We are near certain that no other state in the nation allows for this type of 'interpersonal' and highly problematic 'investigative tool' to facilitate prostitution arrests,” the Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery wrote to lawmakers this week ahead of a Senate committee hearing regarding the law Friday.

One of the supposed byproducts of the Kings acquiring Marian Gaborik was the notion that forwards Jeff Carter and Mike Richards could resume their partnership, helping shake Richards out of a prolonged slump. It hasn't quite happened. Richards has three goals in 2014 - nine in all this season - and has no points in the last six games since scoring the game-winner at Winnipeg on March 6. In the last five games, Carter has one assist, but he did score in the shootout of Thursday's win against Washington.

SEATTLE - A review of crucial systems on Boeing's 787 Dreamliner ordered immediately after two serious 787 battery failures in January 2013 has concluded that the jetliner is safe, meets design standards and is about as reliable as other Boeing aircraft were after being introduced, according to a final report published Wednesday. The review, conducted by Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing Co. technical experts, also validates the oversight role played by the regulatory agency, concluding that "the FAA had effective processes in place to identify and correct issues.

WASHINGTON -- As part of its campaign to step up efforts to address climate change, the White House on Wednesday announced the creation of a new website to serve as a one-stop location for the enormous amount of climate data housed at different federal agencies. The initiative to make the information more accessible to communities, researchers and industries trying to adapt to global warming is the latest move by the White House to deliver on a pledge that President Obama made last June to use his executive authority to address the causes and effects of climate change in light of congressional inaction on the issue.

Diva Rule No. 1: Know how to make a big entrance. Diva Rule No. 2: Know how to make a big exit. Diva Rule No. 3: Do these things as often as humanly possible. The return earlier this month of ABC's "Once Upon a Time" marked the end of the midseason premieres. By the end of the month, the premieres of the midseason replacements should also have concluded, giving us a few blessed weeks of "normal" television viewing before the actual season finales begin. If you're confused about the difference between a midseason premiere and a midseason replacement premiere, the answer is increasingly "not much.
