Not even during the days of Tom Meusborn when he was winning eight City Section championship as coach of the Chatsworth Chancellors did he have a pitchng staff that pulled off the feat of the Chancellors this past week. It started on Tuesday, when sophomore Josh Garcia allowed two hits in the first inning against No. 1-ranked Harvard-Westlake, then no-hit the Wolverines over the final five innings in a 1-0 loss. On Thursday, four Chatsworth pitchers held tough in a 3-3, 10-inning tie against another strong Mission League opponent, Alemany.

Now the Chancellors have a top freshman pitcher in Tommy Palomera, who threw a two-hitter Saturday to beat Saugus, 2-0, and send the team into the semifinals of the Easton tournament. The Metrolink passenger railroad Thursday will become the first commuter service in the nation to roll out a sophisticated collision avoidance system designed to overcome human error. Had so-called positive train control been in place five years ago, experts say, it would have prevented Metrolink's deadly Chatsworth crash. In that accident, an engineer missed a red stop signal while text-messaging on his cellphone and struck a Union Pacific freight train head-on. Twenty-five people died and 135 were injured.

No high school basketball team in Southern California has made a faster rise to prominence than Chatsworth Sierra Canyon, which starts three freshmen and has won 15 of its 17 games while building a resume that could leave the Trailblazers playing in the new Open Division for the playoffs come February. One of those young players is 6-foot-7 Cody Riley, who doesn't look or act like a freshman. Calm, cool and confident, Riley is part of a generation that grew up playing in big games on travel teams and seemingly made a seamless transition to high school basketball.
