The California Highway Patrol officer hospitalized after a collision with a trash truck Friday in Chatsworth has worked with the department for five years, authorities said. Shane Chase was en route to a call while traveling south on the curbside lane of Topanga Canyon Boulevard when the truck, traveling in the same direction in the outside lane, turned in front of him near Nordhoff Street, said LAPD Lt. It started out as a neighborhood dispute about cleaning up after pet dogs. But the argument has escalated into a criminal case against a prominent local judge who has been charged with battery for allegedly pushing and injuring a woman who was walking her dogs. City attorney officials said the quarrel occurred July 18 when Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Craig Richman saw Connie Romero place a plastic bag of animal waste on the curb next to a street. Romero accuses Richman of pushing her from behind and knocking her to the ground, said city attorney's spokesman Rob Wilcox.

The winter baseball season will enter high gear for most teams in November, and three sophomores in the San Fernando Valley are generating excitement. Catcher Ryan Mendoza of Lake Balboa Birmingham, pitcher Josh Garcia of Chatsworth and pitcher Tommy Costello of West Hills Chaminade all have the talent to be among the best. Mendoza started as a freshman at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. Birmingham Coach Matt Mowry said Mendoza has the best defensive skills at the catcher position since Birmingham's All-City catcher, Jose Carrillo, who was a four-year starter more than 10 years ago. Garcia was a major contributor on varsity as a freshman at Chatsworth and appears ready to assume the ace role.

On Sept. 12, 2008, hundreds of Los Angeles-area commuters had begun their trips home from work, reflecting on their days and making plans for the evening ahead as they relaxed aboard Metrolink 111. At 4:22 p.m., however, those plans - and their lives - were shattered as the commuter train collided head-on with a Union Pacific freight train just west of the Chatsworth station. Twenty-four passengers and the Metrolink train's engineer lost their lives, and more than 100 passengers were hospitalized.

In a solemn ceremony, a memorial honoring the victims of the 2008 Metrolink crash in Chatsworth was unveiled Thursday at the Moorpark railroad station. Victims and the relatives of those who were killed or injured gathered on the fifth anniversary of the crash to dedicate a large bronze plaque mounted in stone. The memorial states, "Metrolink 111, September 12, 2008, In memory of those who left us. In honor of those who survived. " "This is to show the victims that they will not be forgotten," said Barbara Kloster, an organizer of the event whose son was severely injured.

City Section power Woodland Hills El Camino Real has gone back to the basics _ fielding, pitching and timely hitting. After a 14-17 record last season and a first-round playoff loss, the Conquistadores are going to make a quick turnaround in 2014. They've already advanced to the semifinals of the VIBL playoffs after a 4-1 victory over Granada Hills Kennedy on Thursday. Using a combination of talented sophomores up from junior varsity and a couple of hungry varsity returnees, El Camino Real should be back near the top of the West Valley League.

With San Fernando having won the City Section baseball championship twice in the last three years, people seem to be thinking that powers Chatsworth and Woodland Hills El Camino Real are on the decline. Hold off on the supposed demise of those two programs. This summer in the Valley Invitational Baseball League, Chatsworth is 10-1 under new Coach Curtis Scott. The Chancellors have been showing off three young pitchers in sophomore Josh Garcia and juniors Anthony Mayorga and John Cashman.
