Right-handed pitchers Steven Ames and Matt Magill were promoted to the Dodgers' 40-man roster, making them ineligible to be selected by other teams in the Rule 5 draft next month. The Dodgers now have 38 players on their 40-man roster. Ames, a 24-year-old reliever, saved 18 games and posted a 1.54 earned-run average for double-A Chattanooga this year. He struck out 72 batters in 63 1/3 innings. Magill, 23, was 11-8 with a 3.75 ERA in 26 starts for Chattanooga. He struck out 168 batters in 146 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers are recalling pitcher Nathan Eovaldi from double-A Chattanooga to start in place of Ted Lilly on Tuesday against Milwaukee. Although Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly coyly deflected questions about Eovaldi on Sunday, Chattanooga pitching coach Chuck Crim later confirmed that the pitcher is headed to Los Angeles and said he was told the right-hander would take Lilly's place in the rotation. Lilly, who started the season on the disabled list because of neck stiffness, gave up eight runs and nine hits in 31/3 innings in a season-worst outing in Arizona his last time out. And speculation that Eovaldi might take Lilly's place for at least one start surfaced Saturday when his scheduled Southern League start was shortened to a one-inning relief appearance in which he struck out the only three batters he faced.

Volkswagen Group of America has announced plans to add 800 jobs at its factory in Chattanooga, Tenn., to increase production of its hot-selling Passat sedan. The new positions will bring the total for new jobs at the plant this year to about 1,000 and will push overall employment to 3,700, including positions offered by the automaker's contractors. The expansion comes as the U.S. auto market continues to gain strength after nearly collapsing in 2008 and 2009. Auto information company Kelley Blue Book Co. is projecting that the annual rate of industrywide sales in the nation will hit 14.6 million this month, the best March since 2007.

Reporting from Houston — Having promoted Jerry Sands to great fanfare last month, the Dodgers dipped into the minor leagues again Tuesday for another top prospect. Consider Rubby De La Rosa as shocked as anyone by his arrival in the major leagues. "I'm very surprised," said the 22-year-old right-hander who had been pitching for double-A Chattanooga fewer than 24 hours earlier. Manager Don Mattingly said the Dodgers "wanted to put another quality arm out there" with four relievers on the disabled list and other pitchers battling bouts of ineffectiveness.
