The process was routine. L.A. County Sheriff's homicide investigator Kevin Lloyd was flipping through snapshots of tattooed gang members. Then one caught his attention. Inked on the pudgy chest of a young Pico Rivera gangster who had been picked up and released on a minor offense was the scene of a 2004 liquor store slaying that had stumped Lloyd for more than four years. Each key detail was right there: the Christmas lights that lined the roof of the liquor store where 23-year-old John Juarez was gunned down, the direction his body fell, the bowed street lamp across the way and the street sign — all under the chilling banner of RIVERA KILLS, a reference to the gang Rivera-13.

Around noon Saturday, a stroll down Trousdale Parkway on USC's campus during the L.A. Times Festival of Books turned up mothers and daughters wearing headbands with balloons shaped like Minnie Mouse's ears, as well as a person inside a Wienerschnitzel hot dog costume who posed for pictures. A few yards away, adults sang the first few lines of a popular show at the Children's Stage: “Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high.…” Before the crowd could continue in chorus, actor LeVar Burton asked whether anyone had seen an episode of "Reading Rainbow," the PBS children's show he once hosted.

This gentle chest-opening pose can be adjusted to accommodate your level of flexibility. With regular practice, this pose becomes quite enjoyable and gives you a chance to reconnect with yourself while releasing tension and tightness in your chest. Lie down on a level surface with a support bolster or rolled towel under the bottom of your shoulder blades and a yoga block beneath your head. Extend your arms to the sides and bend your elbows so that your hands are on either side of your head.

"A Baldwin Brothers Crib Sheet" was a hoot until I read the line about Stephen Baldwin--"hairless as a pre-adolescent" (Film Clips, April 3). What a snide, gratuitously negative way to describe a man with a smooth chest! The anonymous "Film Clips staff" reduces smoothness in men to a kind of arrested development, as if such men were stuck in puberty. Would you let this same limited standard of male beauty ostracize such "hairless" types as Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has the biggest smooth chest ever, or Tom Cruise, Richard Gere, Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson, Patrick Swayze, Michael Douglas, Gabriel Byrne, Don Johnson or good old Paul Newman?

This strength-training exercise can be used to challenge your chest, shoulders and biceps at the same time. All you'll need is a set of light dumbbells (3 to 5 pounds each). Remember to stand tall with your abdominals pulled in to support your lower back throughout the move. -- 1) Grasp a weight in each hand and stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees slightly and pull your navel in toward your spine to avoid over-arching your lower back. Inhale, bringing both arms out to your sides with your elbows and wrists just a few inches below shoulder level.

SACRAMENTO -- A coalition of healthcare providers and insurance companies has amassed a massive financial show of force as they prepare to fight an effort to raise limits on medical malpractice awards. The opposition campaign had $31.3 million at the end of December, almost entirely in loans, according to a report filed Friday. The loans allow the contributors to retract their money if the proposed initiative does not qualify for the November ballot. Meanwhile, supporters had just $374,843 in the bank at the end of December, but all of their resources came from cash contributions.

Gov. Jerry Brown hasn't officially declared his intention to seek a fourth term as governor this year, but he has $17 million available to spend on a campaign. Brown added $9.9 million to his reelection account during 2013, on top of the $7 million he had banked at the beginning of the year. The report also illustrates some of the unique advantages Brown enjoys in the campaign world, after a political career that has spanned six decades. His high name recognition and deep political connections have allowed him to avoid spending large sums on consultants and fundraisers.

SACRAMENTO - He has millions of dollars in his campaign account, solid approval ratings and a small number of potential challengers who are virtually unknown, but Gov. Jerry Brown still won't say whether he'll run for reelection next year. As recently as Tuesday, the governor deflected the question at a public event. "I am aware that in November of next year there will be an election," he said, "and I will make some decisions regarding that. " Two days later, he joined deep-pocketed Hollywood luminaries in a campaign fundraiser at the Bel-Air home of Disney studio chief Alan Horn.

San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan is doubtful for Friday's game as his team visits the Lakers at Staples Center. A CT scan Thursday confirmed a chest contusion, according to the Spurs. Duncan's status is listed as day to day, but doubtful against the Lakers -- although he will travel to Los Angeles with the team.

Here's one way to conquer your fear while hiking up the steep cables on Yosemite 's Half Dome this season: Try thumping your chest a bit. This wisdom comes from Henry Austin, 23, of Eugene, Ore., after he and two buddies set out on a quest to hike about 4,800 feet up to the top of the granite face. His blog post about what he discovered on that trip won him third place in the Young Travel Writers Scholarship contest sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers and the Family Travel Forum . "Confidence is crucial up here, one misstep and it's game over," he writes.

Hope Rising (yes, her real name) says that the day she watched her husband pull out of their driveway for the last time, she collapsed, clutching her stomach in pain. That was, she says, in March 2012, a day before the couple's seventh wedding anniversary. Rising says she begged him not to go, and after he left, she couldn't get out of bed for days, though she rarely slept. "Usually I'd just lie in bed and stare at the wall or the ceiling," Rising, 47, said. "I was angry that he left, and then I'd think about what I could have done differently for him not to leave.

It was a scene never before seen in the history of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame football. After Koa Farmer made an interception on the third play of the game on Friday night against Encino Crespi, he came to the sideline and tried to give Coach Kevin Rooney, in his 34th season, a chest bump. Rooney, who's had two hip replacement surgeries, tried his best. They both left their feet. Rooney's headphones went flying and the word is the chest bump was closer to a hip bump. Assistant Coach Jeff Kraemer said, "When a 17-year-old knocks over a senior citizen and thousands cheer, you know it's a special night.

Chicago White Sox starter Chris Sale had a rough night in Friday's 11-5 loss to the Texas Rangers. The left-hander gave up eight hits and eight runs over seven innings to fall to 9-12 on the season. But while the game was virtually meaningless for the lowly White Sox in the standings, that didn't stop Sale from taking out his frustrations on an ice chest in the dugout between innings. Based on his arm movement during the ice-chest beatdown, Sale definitely had the strength to pitch two more innings, but his erratic technique probably is what also led to his bad night on the mound.
