It took three days for the Raiders to have their first fight in training camp at Oxnard. During Wednesday afternoon's practice last year's top draft choice, Chester McGlockton, fought offensive lineman Rich Stephens in a pass-blocking drill. "It's the third day of practice, which is normally a tough day--the hump day," Coach Art Shell said. "Tempers kind of get hot and a couple of big guys started to wrestle."

One man came into training camp with high hopes, the other with hopes flagging. One came in injury free, the other struggling to recover from an injury that cost him the 1991 season. One had the security of being a No. 1 draft choice, the other the insecurity of having failed to make two previous clubs.

It has become a weekly ritual at Raider Coach Art Shell's Monday news conference. A reporter asks about the injured foot of defensive lineman Chester McGlockton. "It's still sore," Shell replies. "He can't put any weight on it." End of subject. But hardly the end of conjecture. McGlockton, the team's No. 1 draft choice, came to training camp with rave reviews out of Clemson, where he was the Atlantic Coast Conference lineman of the year in 1991.

One rides the stationary bike, pounds the speed bag and bides his time, waiting for his injured foot to heal, his future seemingly ensured. The other works feverishly through two-a-days workouts, his mind trying to block out the pain of a sore hamstring. He doesn't have much time, his future precarious. As brothers, they are close. As prospects, they are far apart. These are the McGlocktons, Chester and Leon, two of 80 players in camp with the Raiders.

Thinking big, the Raiders drafted 653 pounds during the first two rounds of Sunday's NFL draft with the hope it will be enough when push comes to shove in the AFC West. After considering an offer from San Francisco about quarterback Steve Young, the Raiders kept the 16th overall pick and selected Clemson's Chester McGlockton, a 337-pound defensive lineman who has drawn comparisons with another Clemson behemoth, William (Refrigerator) Perry.
