Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. is entering its 20s with another strong earnings report, a commitment to ditch genetically modified ingredients and an expanding Asian food concept. In its second quarter, which ended June 30, the fast-casual chain and stock market darling saw same-store sales increase 5.5%. The figures, announced after the market closed Thursday, helped push Chipotle stock up 7.7%, or $29.14, to $405.89 a share midday Friday in New York. The Denver company's stock is up nearly 27% so far in 2013.

All it took for Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.'s stock to tumble 7% in less than five minutes was a recommendation to short from hedge fund manager David Einhorn. The plunge was deep and immediate. The Greenlight Capital founder's concerns about the fast-casual chain's surging growth, price increases, problems with possible illegal immigrants and ability to shake off renewed competition from Taco Bell set off a mad sell-off Tuesday. Speaking at the Value Investing Congress in New York, Einhorn said Chipotle has ridden high in recent years, according to news reports . The company has been on a tear since late 2008, going from less than $40 a share to well over $400.

For the first time in 20 years, the Mexican fast casual chain Chipotle is adding a new protein to the menu, and it's tofu. Surprised? The tofu dish is called "sofritas," and it hits Southern California Chipotle menus June 3. The name comes from sofrito, the Spanish word for the combination of aromatic ingredients that have been cut into small pieces, such as onion, garlic and peppers.
