Heavy rain and flooding, already blamed for three deaths in the Pacific Northwest, washed out a major highway near Mount Hood and forced the shutdown of 59 miles of the North Cascades Highway in Washington state Thursday. The White River flowed over Oregon Highway 35 on Mount Hood's eastern flank Monday and Tuesday, cutting 20-foot-deep ruts through the road and sending boulders and trees rolling down the mountainside, said Bill Barnhart, a Department of Transportation manager.

Just as Disney will pull "The Lion King" from theaters at the height of its popularity, Greg Arnette has yanked his company's best-selling sunglasses from store shelves. The move was prompted by fears that the 1950s-style wrap-around, chrome-plated plastic shades--called Ravens--were becoming overexposed. The Beastie Boys wore them on the covers of Details and Vibe, Lenny Kravitz wore them on "MTV Unplugged," and Madonna wore them to a Laker game.

While Arnette is surfing and snowboarding, some of the people who helped him build his business are now busy with a new sunglass company, Corporation Eyeball in San Clemente. "We put the band back together," said Craig Lark, a founder of the fledgling company, which will make sunglasses under the Von Zipper brand. "We had so much fun together, when it was just us doing it out of a small San Clemente office, that we're gonna do it again."

Detroit Tigers rookie reliever Joel Zumaya, who has a 1.98 earned-run average in 56 games, has a sprained right wrist and won't be available for a few days. "He has a tendinitis in his right wrist, which is causing some tightness in his forearm," team trainer Kevin Rand said Tuesday. A doctor examined Zumaya on Monday and the right-hander received a cortisone shot. He will not pick up a baseball until at least Friday, Rand said.
