Attorneys for a coalition of farmers and environmentalists told a state appellate court it should overturn approval of a $43-million coal-burning power plant because it violates environmental law and will further damage crop production in the San Joaquin Valley, the nation's richest farming region. Chris Garrett, attorney for GWF Inc., the power company, told judges of the 5th District Court of Appeal that the project has state-of-the-art coal-burning technology that will not damage air quality.

Women--30, Barbara Sotura; 35, Rae Murbach; 40, Vickie Cinquegrani; 45, Judy Marsh; 50, Betsy Roberti. Seven baseball players from Westside high schools are this season's roster at Los Angeles Harbor College.

Harbor will meet San Jose City College today at 1 p.m. in the first round of the state baseball playoffs at Sacramento City College. The Seahawks (32-14) earned the spot in the four-team tournament by defeating Cypress, 2-1, in the Southern Regional final. If Harbor defeats San Jose (38-13), the North's No. 2 team, it will play the winner of today's Cerritos-Sacramento game at 3 p.m. Saturday. If the Seahawks, No. 1 in the South, lose they'll play the loser of that game at 11 a.m. Either team will be difficult to beat.

Seal Beach's Laura Lee Connery finished among the top five in two in-line skating events Sunday afternoon at ESPN's B3 event in Seal Beach. Connery was second in the women's street competition with a score of 44.2. Fabiola Samoes da Silva of Hoboken, N.J., won the event with a score of 50.2. Da Silva won the women's half pipe competition with a score of 59.8. Connery was fourth with a score of 34.8. In the men's half pipe competition, Seal Beach's Chris Garrett was fourth with a score of 68.

Mickey Joseph ran for two touchdowns and passed for three more as eighth-ranked Nebraska routed Minnesota, 56-0, on Saturday. Joseph, making his second start in place of injured Mike Grant, ran four yards for his first score in the first quarter. He ran one yard for another touchdown, and threw 27 yards to Jon Bostick and one yard to Chris Garrett for touchdowns in a 28-point second quarter. Garrett has seven catches in his career, six for touchdowns.

Gen. William “Kip” Ward, who was found by investigators to have improperly spent thousands of dollars on lavish travel and other expenses, will retire as a three-star general, one step below the four-star rank he held when he was head of the U.S. Africa Command, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Defense. The decision to demote Ward was announced as official Washington is dealing with the resignation of retired Army Gen. David Petraeus as CIA director because of an extramarital affair.

For the first time since 1961, Nebraska and Oklahoma weren't playing for the Big Eight championship. But that didn't seem to matter to Nebraska quarterback Gerry Gdowski. Gdowski threw for a career-high 225 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score, leading the sixth-ranked Cornhuskers past Oklahoma, 42-25, Saturday. Colorado clinched the conference title earlier in the day, beating Kansas State, 59-11.
