Missing a week of practice is unacceptable to Chris Richards, the first-year coach at Monroe. Even for a senior quarterback with a wealth of experience. Diego Barba, who started 22 games in 1998 and '97, won't play tonight when the Vikings try to end Sylmar's league winning streak at 67. Barba has been at odds with Richards since transferring to Sylmar after last season. He transferred back to Monroe during the summer, but by then, Steve Beltran had taken over at quarterback.

Chris Richards, another in a series of major-college running backs off the assembly line at San Fernando High School, is running out of warranty at Cal. Damaged body parts are a recurring problem for Richards, a senior tailback. The latest chip in his chassis is a bruised shoulder. He was held out of last week's 44-13 loss to Washington State but is listed as probable for Saturday's Pacific 10 Conference game here against UCLA. Richards has become a regular on Cal's injury report.

The Vikings have lost five games on the field, forfeited a 49-0 victory over Cleveland for using an ineligible player and had to stop a game against Canoga Park because Richards did not have emergency medical cards for his players. Finally, a ray of sunshine fell on the Vikings. Monroe surprised San Fernando, 9-7, with a strong defensive effort and a field goal by Marvin Cortez with eight seconds to play.
