CAIRO - It was nearly 9 p.m., but the Church of the Virgin Mary, the heart of the Christian community in a ramshackle neighborhood on Cairo's outskirts, was alive with activity. One elaborate Coptic wedding ritual was ending, and another was soon to begin. Relatives and friends of the couples crowded the church's entryway, spilling onto the sidewalks of a busy street that roared with traffic night and day. That was when the gunfire erupted. The assailants were masked and riding motorbikes, witnesses said.

For decades it was a missing relic of the "Star Wars" era: an Arthurian tale about a knight returning from the crusades who is transported to a mystical realm where he must rescue a princess. Called "Black Angel," the 25-minute movie was written, directed and produced in 1979 by Roger Christian, an art director who won an Academy Award for his set decoration work on "Star Wars. " "Black Angel," which was made with the support of "Star Wars" director George Lucas, was screened in Europe and Australia as a short film just before showings of "The Empire Strikes Back" in 1980.

Matt Redman, an English singer-songwriter, and the veteran rapper TobyMac took home multiple trophies Tuesday night at the 44th annual Dove Awards, one of Christian music's highest accolades. Redman's "10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)" was named song of the year and Redman was named songwriter of the year, while TobyMac won the prestigious artist of the year prize in a ceremony presented by the Gospel Music Assn. at Nashville's Allen Arena. TobyMac, a former member of the Christian hip-hop act DC Talk, also ruled the pop/contemporary album category with his expansive 2012 release "Eye on It," which won a Grammy Award in February and debuted at No. 1 last year on the Billboard 200. The last three movies produced by Mark Burg - a sequel to "Saw," the remake "Texas Chainsaw 3D" and a violent revenge tale called "The Tortured" - were all rated R for "grisly" and "sadistic" violence and were hardly pleasant experiences for characters trying to remain alive. But Hollywood has a habit of making strange bedfellows, and when Burg's latest project arrives in theaters on Friday, fans of the horror veteran's work may be surprised by its story: "Grace Unplugged" is a Christian drama about a church singer (AJ Michalka)

In his church office, pastor Chuck Smith kept a crown made of thorns and a jar full of candy. The thorns were from the Holy Land. The candy was for his grandkids. The image suggested his special appeal as a preacher: A harsh, old-school Christianity delivered with grandfatherly sweetness. Smith, the founder of the Jesus People and the Calvary Chapel movement, and one of the most influential figures in modern American Christianity, died Thursday morning at his home in Newport Beach after a two-year battle with lung cancer, church officials said.

Minnesota Vikings fans who have been clamoring for the team to bench quarterback Christian Ponder have gotten their wish ... sort of. The team announced Friday that Matt Cassel will start at quarterback for Sunday's game against Pittsburgh in London, although Ponder said the switch was based on his fractured rib -- as opposed to his performance -- and that he will be back as soon as possible. "They just made a decision for what's best for me and my health and this team," Ponder said, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Re "Pope wants to shift focus to mercy," Sept. 20 There is much more than a change of tone in the recent statements of Pope Francis. The tone is pastoral, and the substance is one of old-fashioned charity and humility. The Romans used to remark about Christians' love for one another. Today, we have culture wars between Catholic factions. Some are fixated on orthodoxy, and others pledge their allegiance to social justice. Some are fighting the seven deadly sins, and others are working in soup kitchens.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Two suicide bombs exploded outside a crowded church in northwestern Pakistan just as Sunday services ended, killing at least 75 people and wounding more than 100, authorities said, in one of the nation's worst attacks against Christians in years. The dead and injured, including adult worshipers, children and police officers, overwhelmed the emergency ward of Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital, the city's largest, where television footage showed hallways filled with corpses, badly wounded patients and women and children crying over the charred bodies of relatives.
